X-Men: Apocalypse got a mixed reviews and it splitting fans. What went wrong? Does this movie good or bad? After seeing it on the cinema, I knew something really went wrong. I have already written my thought about the trailers and TV spot, check out my article: https://creators.co/@Adipurnama/3896972
The movie started with an introduction of the villain known as Apocalypse, and how he got stuck in "darkness", we got to see the original four horsemen as in the comics and the animation.
The scene went on and we got our first introduction the new young mutants: Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Jean Grey. Cyclops got pretty good introduction here, as well as how he interact with his brother, Alex Summers (Havok) and his love interest, Jean Grey. He got quite a good screen time too. In my opinion this character has been redeemed successfully. Singer's got it right.
As for Nightcrawler, the fighting with Angel was good, and yeah we can see it in the trailers and TV-spot. After Mystique help him busted out from the cage, they went on searching for Magneto. They went to sewer-like (Morlocks?) and talk to Caliban, which used his powers to locate mutants and get paid to do it. Knowing whereabout of Magneto, the two went to Professor X and talked about it.
Meanwhile, after resurrected, Apocalypse wander the city of Cairo and found Storm, and try to recruit her. After she got recruited, he went to talk to Caliban searching powerful mutants, and while he was there, Psylocke got interested and joining him as well. Apparently Psylocke knew Angel as in the comic they have been in quite relationship for some years. Psylocke leads Apocalypse to Angel place and recruiting him and of course giving him the new looks and wings. The last recruit was Magneto, who in the movie have had family and live quite happily some time. After his family got killed, he got recruited.
For the next section, CAREFUL SPOILERS!!
The scene goes and because Professor X using cerebro to locate Magneto, whereas in the movie had been recruited by Apocalypse and joined the other three, he got interacted with the villain. Apocalypse then take control of Cerebro and Professor X, giving order to activate the nuclear.
Apocalypse and his horsemen then went after Professor X, alas Havok accidentally blows the entire schools. A fraction of seconds when the explosion took place, Quicksilver tried to save everyone in the building except Havok because he was just too close with the blast.
William Stryker and his soldiers then came and kidnapped several people from there. The three of young mutants, Cyclops, Jean and Nightcrawler, teleported and going after Stryker.
In the weapon X facility, while the three figuring out to release the others, found "Weapon X" Hugh Jackman as Logan (with his weapon x uniform) is in the movie (as the trailer have been teased) and got quite screen time for fighting all the Stryker's men and butchered them as he in berserk mode. With Jean help he took off all the lab equipment and got out the facility. As they rescuing Mystique and the others, Apocalypse deliver the message through Professor X to all people about the end of the world and what he want to build.
The X-Men then took out a plane from there and goes into big fight against the Apocalypse. The fight was quite intense. While Apocalypse trying to transfer his consciousness to Professor X, the four horsemen fighting the X-Men.
Finally the X-Men saved the day, Professor X got bald, Jean Grey goes into the Phoenix mode, and by combining her powers with the other X-Men and ex-four horsemen, they defeated Apocalypse.
This is pretty much sum up of the movie, which I think they kind of wasted some opportunities. They got a lot of characters in it so it does feel that they need more development, especially the four horsemen. They didn't kill off Psylocke, that's reassuring because she looks great in her costume but not in her character development, we did not see her motivation clear enough. As for Angel, well it looks like he was killed, but who knows, judging from the comics, he has healing factor too, although not as strong as Wolverine. So it depends on the producer and director in the next installment.
How about the good guy in the film? Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress and she does a fairly good job delivering the message of the movie, but I prefer the character is not Mystique. They messing up with this character which I personally didn't like. She was portrayed as the saviour and every young mutants respect her especially in the event of 73s which occur in X-Men: Days of Future Past. I would like to kill off her so that she may became a true savior in this movie, but they did not take this route. Pretty much she leads the X-Men as the movie ends with the young X-Men training in the danger room with their classic outfit as can be seen from the photo set.
The best scene from this movie was when Quicksilver doing his things. It was hilarious and awesome, especially when he was on the X-mansion and saving almost everyone!
This song will stuck in your head for a while!
James Mcavoy and Michael Fassbender performed perfectly in their respective roles. Every time Fassbender shows up, the scene was amazing, the acting was perfect, it is as we felt the tragedy he is going through. Beast? he rarely got a spotlight, and yes, the spotlight goes to Mystique, again, the savior.
How about Apocalypse himself? He does fairly good enough, Oscar Isaac does a pretty good job portraying the characters although his motivation as a character was a little shaky, but his powers was uncanny and terrifying enough. There are something got wasted in this character. It is so unfortunate that Apocalypse just shows up in this movie and then killed off (but who knows they would resurrect him again). They should have split this movie into two parts, so every good guy and villain got enough screen time to build up their characters. It is pretty interesting if they want to build this franchise into the classic "Age of Apocalypse" storyline.
Lastly, it is clear that they want to introduce Mr. Sinister sooner or later in the next installment. They are teasing him with post-credit scene. Several people (probably he was one of them) goes into the Weapon X facility and took out Logan sample. I think that they want to tease something for the next Wolverine movie, perhaps X-23 introduction?
Also, it should be noted that in one interview Tye Sheridan said he will be on two more X-Men movies. Consider how deep the relation Mr. Sinister has with Cyclops and Jean in the comics, it looks like they will go this route, probably they want to use this to established Cable for Deadpools sequel.
X-Men: Apocalypse does have the potential to be a good film, unfortunately they did not deliver it quite well. Personally, with the amount of mutants showing up in this movie, it might becoming the X-Men movie that fans hope for. I do think this movie good enough, it has a fun factor and quite entertaining. I realize its impact splitting the fans and reviewers, because they have so many potential. I think they should hire another fresh-talented-envisioned director to bring up fresh ideas for the next movies.
Some says, "The third one didn't performed well". It's funny when this nod came out in the movie when the young mutants went to a movie theater and watched Return of Jedi and compare it with Empire Strikes Back. Do they realize this is also their third movie?
That's my thought and spoiler review. Have you seen the movie yet? What do you think?
