From the moment that the Deadpool gave us our first look at Wade Wilson's costume posed on a bearskin rug à la Burt Reynolds, we fans were fairly certain that the team behind the movie was going to knock it out of the park. From the promo material absolutely nailing the vibe of Deadpool to the Comic-Con trailer absolutely slaying, I get the feeling we might be in for something special.
Apparently, Fox Studios feels the same way, because they're already deep in discussions for a sequel. Producer Simon Kinberg, who is about as close to a Kevin Feige-type figure as Fox has, spoke with Collider the other day and revealed they have absolute confidence in the movie:
We certainly are talking about the sequel—we were talking about the sequel while we were making the movie just because when you make a film like this that’s from a serialized source material, you hope that it’s the first of many… But yeah [Fox is] feeling good about it, we’re all feeling really proud of it, so hopefully before it comes out we will be well into the process of figuring out a sequel.
He's already seen the first cut and assures fans that the film will have exactly the dark, edgy vibe of the trailer:
I have seen a rough cut of Deadpool and it’s fantastic. It’s a really good movie. It delivers on the promise of the trailer… We really committed and leaned into it being R-rated. It’s just darker and edgier and weirder in the best way—like Deadpool should be—than any other movie in the genre.
I think we all knew that unless the movie absolutely bombed, it would be getting a sequel. But still, it's great to know that Fox knows what it's doing with one of the hardest to handle characters in the entire Marvel pantheon.
Deadpool hits theaters on February 12, 2016.
