The buzz behind a story about two bunnies.
Nick Jr.’s popular kids show Max & Ruby aired in 2002 with a storyline following two bunny siblings. Viewers watched as Ruby, a seven year old took care of her younger brother Max, while dealing with his annoying antics. Aside from teaching kids lessons in life, audiences and internet memes were captivated by Ruby’s interaction with her brother. To some critics at times Ruby seemed to act bossy towards Max, and was more concerned about her club scout and tea party sessions. These instances occurred when Max knew how to solve a problem or find a lost item.
Yet Ruby’s determination to take care of Max and showcase humble and protective instincts balanced out her negative traits.
Although audiences accepted Max & Ruby into their programming, the show failed to answer the one question that boggled viewers.
What happened to Max and Ruby’s parents?
For 14 years, viewers watched Ruby help Max with his projects, cook dinner, get ready for bed and perform parental duties. Occasionally, the show would introduce Max and Ruby’s grandmother who lived nearby.
In some scenes, the camera panned to a family portrait, but the parents were not seen on screen.
Some conspiracy theories suggested that Max & Ruby’s parents were on a business trip. Unfortunately the fact Max would only use one word phrases to speak, suggested perhaps their parents passed away in an accident, and Max's speech patterns was a sign of emotional trauma.
Alas, these theories were debunked when Max and Ruby’s parents appeared unexpectedly in the first episode of Season 6 in September. After five seasons, creator Rosemary Wells assured viewers that Max and Ruby’s parents are alive and well, Max can speak in complete sentences and is attending preschool.
In an interview with Nick Jr. Wells explained the reason behind the parent’s absences,
We don’t see Max and Ruby’s parents because I believe the kids resolve their issues and conflicts differently, when on their own.
With the mystery solved, new episodes of Max & Ruby will give viewers and the Internet something else to talk about concerning the bunny family.
