Margot Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn was without a doubt one of the high points of Suicide Squad. Her ability to really get a good feel for 'The Clown Princess of Crime' was likely the reasoning for her upcoming slated solo film, Gotham City Sirens. In the film, she will be joined by fellow female villains Poison Ivy and Catwoman (who have yet to be casted). That said, some recent news regarding to the film's storyline may or may not have just been teased by Margot Robbie herself.
Robbie Is Spotted Reading Source Material
Above is some photos that Robbie took along side of some fans. In the picture on the left, it is clear that Robbie is reading some Harley Quinn source material. Although, what she is reading exactly can't be exactly deciphered. One Reddit user claimed that what Robbie was reading was the Harley Quinn Valentine's Day Special in Harley Quinn Vol. 3 Kiss Kiss Bang Stab. The user claimed that page visible is page 34 from the annual. Judging from the picture and the fact that I have read the annual myself, I would say that the user is correct. Could this be Robbie's way of teasing us of a potential storyline for Gotham City Sirens? Let's take a look at what all the annual entails.
'Harley Quinn Vol. 3 Kiss Kiss Bang Stab'
Here is the description of the annual as put out by DC Comics:
"Harley was certain she could have it all. She could be the world’s best landlord, protect Coney Island from the scum of the Earth, woo Mason Macabre, work her day job as a psychiatrist, volunteer at the puppy shelter...but that’s a lot of spinning plates, and eventually they’re bound to start breaking! What happens when a psychopath cracks up? Is it possible for Harley to go even more insane?! Don’t miss this big helping of Harley from HARLEY QUINN #14-16, ANNUAL #1, VALENTINE’S DAY SPECIAL #1, and HOLIDAY SPECIAL #1!"
In this annual, Harley notably displays her want to do good for the world (whether it's actually good or she just thinks it is). That said, it showcases her love for animals and even for Batman. Considering that there is a storyline in the annual where Harley bids at an auction for a date with Bruce Wayne, and wins! Not to mention, she ends up stealing a kiss from both Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego Batman by the end of the storyline. I would say that judging from the annual, it's safe to say that Ben Affleck's Batman will have a decent amount of screen time in Gotham City Sirens.
Another interesting storyline in the annual is where Harley tries to help out a Poison Ivy who has lost her memory. The storyline also demonstrates a little bit of the two's potential relationship as Harley lies a smooch on Ivy. That said, storylines weren't potentially the first thing that caught my eye when hearing about Robbie reading this in particular annual. It was more of the fact that Harley Quinn will be changing into a different character than what we saw in Suicide Squad.
Harley Quinn's Look, Life, And New Beginnings
First off, I would like to take sometime to check out Harley Quinn's outfit in the annual. It has the color and patterns of her original outfit from her debut, but it has a somewhat similar style to that of Robbie's look in Suicide Squad. Personally, I think Harley's look will be much like what is pictured above (minus the black and red hair). I believe she will resemble what Harley Quinn looks like in the current DC Rebirth Harley Quinn. The Rebirth outfit seems to me like the best of both worlds. There are elements of her original outfit and her more recent look in Suicide Squad. Also, the outfit has shorts that more resemble regular fitting shorts as compared to the 'hot pants' that Robbie claimed she would never wear again.
The next interesting bit of information that was teased through Robbie's reading of this particular annual is where Harley resides. In the annual, Harley can be seen living at the amusement park on Coney Island. In fact, this is where Harley resides in the current DC Rebirth Harley Quinn series. Coincidence? I think not. I believe that we are being slowly hinted to the fact that Harley will live on Coney Island in the DCEU. This is important because it would mark as the first actual location in the DCEU. Meaning, Coney Island is an actual place unlike a Metropolis or Gotham City. That said, I'm not exactly sure when we will see Harley living on Coney Island considering the upcoming film is titled Gotham City Sirens. Still, keep your eyes open for Harley turning up there in the future.
Lastly, one of the most notable items to take away from Harley Quinn Vol. 3 Kiss Kiss Bang Stab is that it consists of Harley's countless attempts to put her life back into place. The annual really shows how Harley is trying to become a better person in life. this marks a complete change of direction from the Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad who encouraged her fellow Task Force X members to own the fact that they're bad people. Possibly this is also our hint that Harley will in fact have a falling out of some kind with The Joker. That said, it's for certain that we will be seeing a more evolved Harley Quinn that has a better grasp of knowing what she wants in life.
All in all, I'm willing to bet that Robbie intended to be spotted reading this annual. Whether it was an attempt to tease a potential storyline for Gotham City Sirens, or through us off the scent is still yet to be determined. Either way, Harley Quinn is going to be a much different character the next time we see her on screen. Which Harley Quinn we will end up seeing will only be revealed with time.
