Martial Arts has always been a way to escalate a scene for a moviegoers experience. It is a beautiful art form. With the right choreography, a director can turn a few words on a script into a stunning dance that determines the outcome of a confrontation. There have been many films that have unitized this. And today, I want to share a few of my favorites with you.
'Hero' is definitely one of Jet Li's best films. Hero brings a mix of fantastic martial arts with beautiful imagery. This fight scene instantly became one of my favorites. The scene depicts a sword and spear battle between Jet Li and Donnie Yen. In the scene, the two warriors play out how the battle will unfold in their minds, while listening to music in a court yard. This scene is a simple one, but visually stunning all the same.
Ip Man (2008)
The 'Ip Man' franchise came as a complete surprise to me. One day I was walking through the store and I decided it had been a long time since I watched a martial arts film. I wasn't sure what was out there anymore, so I decided to take a chance. The cover of the film mentioned something about Ip Man being the legendary trainer of Bruce Lee. I figured I couldn't go wrong with that. And I was right. I didn't take long before I realized this movie was absolutely fantastic. This movie follows the legendary Master Ip as he rises from the struggles of poverty and oppression to become one of the greatest martial artists of his time.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
'Crouching Tiger, Hidden dragon' was one of the first foreign martial arts films I can remember, to make an impact on American shores. Crouching Tiger brought stunning imagery and martial arts to the fullest. The film utilized extensive wire work to pull off virtually impossible moves. Though there are many great fight scenes throughout this film, most notably the bamboo forest fight. This bar fight scene featuring Zhang Ziyi was alway one of my favorites.
'Watchmen,' is still in my opinion, one of Zack Snyder's best films. The visuals that Snyder uses throughout are some of the most stunning you could witness on screen. Watchmen uses slow motion, wire techniques and precision martial arts, to bring together some great scenes. This scene above that depicts Night Owl and Silk Spectre breaking Rorshach out of prison is one of many great fight scenes throughout this movie.
Batman v Superman (2016)
Despite the backlash 'Batman v Superman' was met with. I had to go with a second Zack Snyder film. If you stuggle to find something positube to be said about director Snyder, you have to give one thing to him, he knows how to put together great visuals and one heck of a fight scene. We all know that Affleck is going to continue to kill it as the Dark Knight. This scene above gave us a taste of what's to come in the future. Batman Saves Martha!
