Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you all are having a splendid holiday season and end of your 2016. Instead of dwelling of the negatives 2016 brought us, I thought I'd focus on the positive for the new year in 2017. We have incredible additions to franchises coming out such as a new #StarWars saga installment, 3 new additions to the #Marvel Cinematic Universe and new original films from some of the best directors in Hollywood like Christopher Nolan and Edgar Wright.
This list will not just be about #superhero films coming out from #Marvel or #DC but original films and also some other franchises on the rise. Will this new year make up for this subpar year of 2016 movies? What are you most excited for in the new year? Let's dive in and countdown the list!
10. Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Back in 2015, Matthew Vaughn's spy thriller #Kingsman: The Secret Service took audiences completely by surprise. What looked to be a run of the mill spy movie in fact turned out to be an outstanding action comedy that gave a breath of fresh air to the spy genre. Vaughn assembled an incredible cast of veteran stars like Colin Firth, Michael Caine, Mark Strong and Samuel L. Jackson with his weird lisp and all. While also bringing new talents to the forefront like Taron Egerton and Sophie Cookson. The violence and action still thrills me whenever I rewatch the film and especially the church sequence with Firth.
The sequel adds even more star power to the cast such as Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, Pedro Pascal, Channing Tatum, and Jeff Bridges.
9. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
This is a film by Luc Besson that once the trailer dropped it completely took me by surprise. If you haven't heard who Luc Besson is he's made films such as The Fifth Element, Lucy, Nikita and Léon: The Professional. What intrigues me so much about this film to put it on my list is that besides 2014's #GuardiansoftheGalaxy it feels like there haven't been any good space Sci-Fi movies the last 5-10 years unless they were in the #StarWars or #StarTrek franchises.
#Valerian feels like Besson is channeling his work on The Fifth Element from the 90's both with the visuals and design. Fingers are crossed that this film lives up to the hype that has been built around this trailer ever since it dropped at Comic Con. We could perhaps have a new fun Sci-Fi franchise on our hands!
8. Spider-Man: Homecoming
The day #Marvel fans have been waiting for is coming. As we saw in 2016's #CaptainAmerica: Civil War, Tom Holland's new #Spiderman is now apart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and can swing around with the Avengers. More good news includes that he is back in high school where the character belongs which is what originally attracted me to Spiderman in my youth in the 1994 animated series. Why is this so far down my list? Simply because it's the sixth Spiderman solo movie in 15 years and honestly there are just other ones I'm more excited for.
Christopher Nolan has a new movie coming out. Honestly, that should be enough to sell you on this. #Dunkirk is Nolan's first attempt in the war genre and from the tone of the trailers released it will be one of his darkest pictures yet. What is selling me on this film is the sheer fact that Christopher Nolan is in my top five favorite directors because he simply hasn't made a bad film yet in his career.
The man who gave us Inception, The Prestige, Batman Begins, and my current favorite film of all time The Dark Knight. The only reason this film is not further down the list is because based completely on the trailers themselves, it has not quite grabbed me as I hoped they would so far. Time will tell later though!
6. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
This form comic book D-list superhero team took the 2014 summer by storm as fans praised James Gunn's ability to make it such a damn fun movie. The sequel looks just as exciting with the old cast returning as well as being joined by tons of new unique characters.
The direction, humor, the casting, the soundtrack, and the fun sci-fi feel are what made the original Guardians so entertaining. Based on the trailers released so far it looks like James Gunn will top himself. My main worry about this film is trying to live up to everyone's expectations and remain original. I may be overthinking it but let's hope that's just me reading too much into it!
5. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
What in the heck is this movie? Well, it's the third feature film of Writer/Director/Playwright Martin McDonagh. He has written and directed two films including 2008's In Bruges and 2012's Seven Psychopaths. If you have not seen these films do yourself a favor and watch them now!. McDonagh's writing dives into very darkly crafted comedy that has you laughing up but also compelled by gripping drama.
We don't know much about the film but the cast announced so far is Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell and Peter Dinklage among others. If you find yourself a fan of writing/directing of Quentin Tarantino or the Coen Brothers then you will like Martin McDonagh's work. They have not released a trailer, poster or even a date for this movie beyond that it should be coming in 2017. I believe in his work that much folks.
4. War for the Planet of the Apes
With the trailer just recently dropping, my excitement has grown for this movie. Following Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, this new addition looks to be another fantastic installment into this rebooted series. Andy Serkis' motion capture performances have been universally praised and even protested he should be given Oscar nominations for the previous two films. The motion capture visual effects have gotten better film by film in this series to astonishing real-looking heights.
Woody Harrelson joins the cast as what looks to be the antagonist to Serkis' Caesar. The war and action is not what interests me but instead this journey that this character Caesar has gone on over the years. This may be one of the few trilogies out there that the films actually got better throughout the series.
3. Baby Driver
You should be excited for this because it is written and directed by currently my favorite director working today Edgar Wright. Coming off of stepping down from the MCU #AntMan film back in 2014, Wright is jumping back into what he does best. Original films. It's been released it is about a young talented music-obsessed but quiet getaway driver (played by Ansel Elgort from The Fault in Our Stars) who works for different bank robbers and gets in trouble when a robbery goes wrong.
Hopefully a trailer will be coming soon as #BabyDriver is scheduled for an August 2017 release date. Supporting cast includes Jamie Foxx, John Hamm and Kevin Spacey among others. If you do not know who Edgar Wright is, he directed classic genre-bending films including Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End and one of my personal top 10 favorites Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Edgar Wright in my eyes is in the same class as Christopher Nolan as one of the few directors alive today who has yet to make a bad film yet.
At first, I was not excited about another Wolverine solo movie. Then that trailer dropped a couple months ago and I was proven wrong. You should be excited for #Logan because Fox seems to be allowing director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman tell the Wolverine story they wanted to tell back in 2013 when they released The Wolverine. After #Deadpool was such a huge success, Fox saw that audiences won't be afraid to pay to see an R-Rated comic book movie.
Add on other facts like this is Hugh Jackman's last film as Wolverine/Logan and that it seems to be loosely based on currently my favorite comic book story Old Man Logan. It doesn't feel like an X-Men sequel. Much like #Deadpool, it feels like it is grasping it's own unique voice in comic book adaptations and that is exactly what we need to avoid superhero movie fatigue. This may be the Wolverine movie I've been waiting for. Saying that as a kid who was Wolverine for Halloween in Kindergarten.
Which now leads us to the #1 movie I'm excited for in 2017.
Drum roll please!
1. Star Wars Episode VIII
Could it really be anything else? And no, I'm not just excited because I just saw #RogueOne a couple weeks ago but this film has been on my mind since the moment the credits rolled in #StarWars #TheForceAwakens. Rian Johnson the writer/director of Looper steps in after JJ Abrams brought the series back to it's more grounded roots.
I'm writing this article at a tragic time as Carrie Fisher who famously played the role of Princess Leia in the series just passed away days ago. She will be remembered in my eyes as one of the top few female characters of ALL TIME in cinema. She was an icon and helped pave the way for female roles to not just be damsels in distress. Without Leia we would have never gotten a Rey in Force Awakens. May she rest in peace.
This film can be one of the best in the series in my eyes because Rian Johnson won't have the responsibility of coming off a 10 year #StarWars hiatus like JJ did where he had to remind us of the original trilogy and try to have audiences forget the bad taste in their mouth of the prequels. Perhaps JJ drew a little too much inspiration in it according to some but that discussion is for another article. I don't want to predict or compare it to possibly being as good as Empire Strikes Back but it is bound to happen someday in this new wave of #StarWars films coming out!
What do you guys think of my Top 10 list of most anticipated movies of 2017?
Do you agree with this list or feel I snubbed some films? I have a feeling I'll get some comments along the lines of the sequels to Alien or Blade Runner or perhaps why Wonder Woman is not on my list but at the moment none of those three films excited me as much as these 10.
