I love writing about movies, TV, books, and all of the other geeky things. I also have a healthy appreciation for Batman. T: @courtshake

Love, hate or begrudgingly tolerate him, Shia LaBeouf gave a lengthy interview to Variety, in which — among a myriad other topics — he mentioned that director David Ayer, (with whom he had previously worked on Fury) was, at one point, considering him for a role in the super-villain team-up flick Suicide Squad, before Warner Bros. put the kibosh on it.

Which Suicide Squad Character Did Ayer Want LaBeouf For?

The Joker? No. There was only room for one crazy method actor villain on that set. Ayer wanted (Actual Cannibal) Shia LaBeouf to play Lieutenant GQ Edwards.

Exactly. Lieutenant Edwards was the role that ended up being portrayed by Scott Eastwood.

This guy.
This guy.

The man-who-swings-with-monkeys told Variety:

"The character was different initially, then Will [Smith] came in, and the script changed a bit. That character and [the character of Rick Flag] got written down to build Will up.”

He went on to say, “I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy.'"

Indeed, he may well be.

Why Shia LaBeouf Or Scott Eastwood?

If my memory serves, Lieutenant Edwards had about as many lines in the film as he did fist bumps (read: not many). The character is the right-hand man of Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), who was the right-hand man of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), which I suppose makes Edwards Waller's right-hand man once removed? Right-hand step-man?

My point is that he was such a nothing character, I don't understand why Warner Bros. would even consider paying either actor for it. Eastwood isn't as big a name as LaBeouf (though it does have more letters), despite its Hollywood pedigree, but both of these men are known figures in the acting community. If it had been a larger role (and perhaps it was in Ayer’s script or original cut, though we may never know), or the heavily-speculated theory that the character would turn out to be Nightwing under cover, then it would have made sense. As far as the theatrical cut is concerned though, Warner Bros. could have hired an extra to play the role, and I doubt it would have made any difference to the final product. This is coming from a guy who was thoroughly entertained by Suicide Squad.

Lieutenant GQ Edwards is, unsurprisingly absent.

Do you think the role would have been better suited to Shia LaBeouf? Do you think it was ridiculous to cast a name in that role? Sound off in the comments! DO IT!!!

In the meantime, feast your eyes on, what I consider to be the greatest project the man has ever been involved in:
