We've got an exciting season for disaster films - we've already had Pompeii, Snowpiercer and Into The Storm and loads more to look forward to. We all know Hollywood loves to trash the landmarks and monuments closest to our hearts... even - or rather, especially - those most beloved, historical and symbolically loaded.

I thought I'd tally up the monuments most trashed on the big screen - to get a taste of what's to come, and prepare myself for the very worst:

Big Ben: 8 TIMES

V for Vendetta
V for Vendetta

  • Mars Attacks! (1996)
  • The Avengers (1998)

Poor Lady Liberty! Don't these people have a heart?! New York City is full of monuments that bear no resemblance to human beings... well, usually those get destroyed too... but still.

  • Independence Day (1996)
  • Deep Impact (1998)
  • A Man Called Hero (1999)
  • A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
  • The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
  • Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (2006)
