I'm an avid movie fan whose favorite movie ever is Back to the Future. I'm the type of person that if I like a TV show, I'll binge watch it

Following a lackluster first installment, horror fans weren't expecting much from Annabelle: Creation, the origin story behind the demonic doll that the Warrens warned us about during The Conjuring. To the surprise of pretty much everyone, though, it became a critical and commercial hit. It's earned $80 million at the box office against a $15 million budget, and it currently holds a fresh 68 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to its predecessor's 29 percent.

Overall, it's safe to say that the movie proved itself to be a worthy addition to the Conjuring franchise, and now New Line Cinema is looking to expand its horizons. The studio set up a contest last month for horror fans called My Annabelle Creation.

The gist of it was for fans to create a short horror film that felt like it could fit into the Conjuring universe. The deadline was tight (less than a month), but hundreds of fans eagerly participated. Now, Sandberg and the studio have chosen the winner of the U.S. contest: Julian Terry for The Nurse.

The short centers around a little girl recovering in a hospital who's assisted by an unwelcome nurse, and it's truly something else Just a little warning before pressing play –– don't watch this by yourself at night... it probably won't go well:

Holy Mother of God. I'm not going to lie, it took me a while to get through the short. Giving the demonic nurse a sweet voice made the short all the more terrifying.

Is 'The Nurse' About To Become Another Installment Of The Conjuring Franchise?

The Conjuring is one of the few cinematic universes that's managed to thrive in our modern competitive film industry. New Line is currently working on spinoffs for and The Crooked Man, and The Conjuring 3 is in active development, but going by the success achieved so far, there's most likely an interest in making the franchise grow past those three movies. That's what has me wondering whether The Nurse will be turned into another chapter of the saga.

The prize for winning the contest is a meeting with Annabelle: Creation director . And while it wasn't directly mentioned, it wouldn't be a stretch to assume that the studio might want to discuss turning the short into a full-fledged movie. That's especially likely, seeing how the rule was to make the short feel as if it could fit into the franchise's mythology.

We also have to consider that the studio already found great success with that same strategy. Sandberg got his start in Hollywood thanks to , a short he developed for an online contest. New Line picked it up and developed it into the 2016 movie of the same name. It earned a whopping $148.9 million against a $4 million budget, and it holds a 76 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Now, you may be wondering whether The Nurse would work as a film. Won't there be problems with expanding such a short story into a larger feature? On top of that, there's the director of short, Julian Terry. It's unclear just how involved he'd be in the movie (if it ever gets made), but going by this sample, he's got a really good eye for horror.

Ultimately, as long as they come up with a solid story, I have no doubt that they can make this hypothetical movie work. It's quite commendable to see New Line looking for fresh talent to continue the Conjuring universe. As fans, a lot of us have had ideas for our favorite movies or franchises, and now the studio is giving people the chance to get their stories out there.

While we wait to see whether or not The Nurse materializes, we can catch a good scare with Annabelle: Creation, which is currently in theaters.

Do you think we'll get to see The Nurse turned into a feature-length film? Would you like to see that happen? Let me know in the comments!
