Nicole Kidman captivated millions of viewers with her performance as Celeste Wright on HBO's Big Little Lies. The actress was one of the best parts of the hit TV drama, and her performance earned her an Emmy win back in September. During the Emmy ceremony, fans were excited to see the actress collect her award, but to our surprise, right before going up on stage Kidman turned to her on-screen husband, Alexander Skarsgård, and planted a kiss on him.
Their good-natured kiss became the talk of the night, as people around the internet simply couldn't believe what they had seen. If you were one of the viewers totally puzzled by the event and have been eager for an explanation ever since, worry not, because we finally know what led to it ... kinda.
Kidman Addressed Her Emmy Kiss, But She Clearly Wasn't Comfortable With It
Norton stirred the conversation toward Kidman's eyebrow-raising kiss with Skarsgård. Surprisingly, her response was a bit... well, puzzling:
"I kissed my husband too! I did kiss him because... but you've gotta understand, I did everything with [Alex]. I've got an amazing supportive gorgeous husband who I love more than anything in the world and I gave Alex a congratulatory kiss and he's like a mannequin. I mean, not a mannequin... I'm done, I'm done."
Did you feel that was a little awkward? Don't worry, you're not alone, because the other guests couldn't contain their laughter. With that said, it was clear that she wasn't comfortable discussing the topic, so it was probably for the best that she set it aside as quickly as possible.
Now, part of her response might have been buried in the awkwardness of the whole situation: "I did everything with Alex." The show featured some incredibly emotionally-draining scenes; Kidman's Celeste was constantly abused by #AlexanderSkarsgard's Perry Wright, and there needed to be a trust between the actors while bringing those scenes to life.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Skarsgård revealed that he and Kidman made sure to get to know each other and form a strong bond prior to the start of production:
"Nicole and I got to know each other really well before we started the project and spent time together and worked on our relationship [...] We both felt it was very important that when we step into that room and shoot those scenes, you have to get to a place of 100 percent trust. The scenes were emotionally and physically so draining. They're incredibly hard to shoot. It was more about getting to know each other and spending time together and working on that trust."
Taking that into account, their kiss was simply a moment between two very close friends. Did it make for an awkward moment on live #TV? Sure, but the reason behind their display of affection is completely understandable.
