Star Wars fans have been waiting impatiently for what title the next installment of the Skywalker Saga will hold and today, we have finally gotten our answer:

The official Star Wars twitter posted this image to their 2.75 million followers and in just under two hours, the post has been retweeted 100,000 times. Not to mention the roughly gradrillion of others that have had video responses and articles, quite like this one!

is the second installment of this rebooted trilogy that consists of Episode VII, VIII and IX and combines all the brilliance of the old with the excitement and vigor of the new. The conclusion of The Force Awakens consisted of Rey () encountering an aged and bearded Luke Skywalker () and ever since that moment, we’ve all been clamoring to see what the hell happened next?!

Retreating From The Norm

Fun Fact: The Last Jedi is, interestingly enough, the first ever installment to a Star Wars live-action trilogy that does not follow the traditional four-worded title associated with those second installments. Both The Empire Strikes Back and Attack Of The Clones are the second installments of their respective trilogies and they, along with the final film, have been four-worded whereas the first installment has been three-worded.

The Original Trilogy

  • Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)
  • Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  • Episode VI: Return Of The Jedi (1983)

The Prequels

  • Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
  • Episode II: Attack Of The Clones (2002)
  • Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith (2005)

The Rebooted Trilogy

  • Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
  • Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)
  • Episode IX: TBA (2019)

What does this mean? I have no idea. I just thought it was an interesting decision on their part. This could be a hint of an attempt to stray away from the conventions associated with the Star Wars trilogy… If they’re going to try something new, why not start with the title and just go from there? Spicing up your franchise with a touch of intrigue could make it more successful than it already will be!

Either way, I am excited for anything Star Wars-related so bring on that glorious galaxy far, far away, titles be damned!

Do you think they should have kept up with the title tradition?
