Olly Moss' illustrations are usually concerned with the Star Wars Universe. His posters for the Star Wars six pack of epics are pretty famous.
. ‘I didn’t need to re-read the books,’ he says, ‘they’re just there in my head," Moss noted to Pottermore.
Moss decided to re imagine each novel in the style of classic British holiday railroad advertisements with Hogwarts as the central focus.
The posters which can be see in both their German and English forms at the end of this article have a 50's vibe that tries to stimulate the feeling of a typical British seaside holiday.
‘I was just a big fan of 1950s design,’ Moss explains to Pottermore, ‘and it just seemed like a natural fit. I really liked the idea of Harry getting on a train and going somewhere exciting every year. There is something very British about that. That period of design – and obviously Harry Potter – is steeped in that imagery and I wanted to bring those two things together.’
Each poster has its own color scheme and sees Hogwarts from the same angle. They gain complexity from the layering of sharply illustrated details culled from each of the novels.
‘I tried to fill them with as many little details as I could within the constraints of keeping the composition and the viewpoint the same every time,’ says Moss.
He points out the Dark Mark that hovers in the clouds above Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. ‘I sent it in and the feedback was, “Do you think we could see a Dark Mark on that poster?” and I said, “Look, it’s already there!”’
Other details Moss adds are the silhouettes of Hagrid and Harry as he is introduced to Hogwarts and the delight and power of magic in the Sorcerer's Stone poster. The Deathly Hallows poster show the epic threesome returning to Hogwarts in a post battle daze.
Pottermore got Moss to name his favorite Harry Potter poster:
When we press him he reluctantly admits that if he had to choose it would be Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. ‘I think it’s the one with the palette which most mimics the style of the old posters. It seems the most authentic to me, which is what I was going for.’
Here are both the German and English posters:
1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
6. Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
7. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
