A couple of weeks ago, reports starting flying around the internet that Hunger Games actor Woody Harrelson was in talks to star across from Alden Ehrenreich in the upcoming Han Solo film from Lucasfilm.
Now the directors of the film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, have confirmed Harrelson's casting with the following statement:
“We couldn’t be more excited to work with an artist with as much depth and range as Woody,” said Phil Lord and Christopher Miller in a statement on Starwars.com. “His ability to find both humor and pathos, often in the same role, is truly unique. He is also very good at ping pong.”
No official character details have been given but reports from his rumoured involvement speak of Harrelson in a mentor type role to Han Solo. Harrelson has of course previously played a mentor figure in a recent Sci-fi series; The Hunger Games.
Harrelson is joining an already impressive cast. Alden Ehrenreich (Rules Don't Apply), Donald Glover (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) are all confirmed for the film.
Personally as a huge Star Wars fan, I couldn't be happier with the casting of Harrelson. He isn't one of the actors I would have personally chosen for a Star Wars role but he sounds like a really great fit for a mentor to Solo. If you haven't checked out The Edge of Seventeen, I highly recommend it, Harrelson is excellent in his supporting role.
The Han Solo film is slated for release in 2018.
