I'm a writer/film theorist. Check out my articles on Pixar, Harry Potter, Back to the Future, Die Hard, politics, and more!

This has been a horrible year. A horrible horrible year. In 2016, we elected the most unqualified inexperienced racist bigot as leader of the free world.

He always looks like he just farted into a crowded elevator

But besides that, we have lost an abnormally large amount of celebrities this year, many of which are in the movie universe. And I feel like we should honor these celebrities, so here are five of them.

1. Alan Rickman

This was an extremely sad death for fans of Harry Potter, like me. Many know him as Severus Snape, the Hogwarts Potions master in the phenomenal franchise.

Others know him as the villain Hans Gruber in Die Hard.

"Yippee-ki-yay, motherf**ker!"

He died on January 14, 2016 at the age of 69 due to pancreatic cancer and this news was shocking to many. His other roles include Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd, Absolem in Alice in Wonderland, the Sheriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and yes, the Metatron in Dogma (got so much criticism for not mentioning it earlier).

Always.

2. David Bowie

Bowie was one of the most famous singers in the 20th century, creating Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, and Ziggy Stardust. I know him as Jareth from the 1986 film, Labyrinth. He died on January 10, 2016 from lung cancer.

3. Gene Wilder

One of Wilder's most famous roles and the role that I know him for is Willy Wonka from the 1971 film adaptation, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. Other notable roles include his roles in Young Frankenstein, Another You, and See No Evil, Hear No Evil. He died on August 29, 2016 due to Alzheimer's Disease complications.

4. Muhammad Ali

Many know Mr. Muhammad Ali as a boxer. He was a very good boxer, but I know him for his activist work for the fight against Parkinson's disease.

What people don't know about him is that he was also a magician. He liked magic (as I do) and had personal magicians. He died June 3, 2016 from septic shock.

5. Carrie Fisher

Actress Carrie Fisher is perhaps best known for her portrayal as Princess Leia in Star Wars.

She also made appearances in works such as When Harry Met Sally, The 'Burbs, and The Blues Brothers. She died on December 27, 2016 from a medical emergency on a plane. Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, died the day after. ;(

Honorable mention to Prince, Abe Vigoda, Harper Lee, Nancy Reagan, Frank Sinatra Jr., Kimbo Slice (I'm just finding out about this! Oh no!), Christina Grimmie, Ron Lester, David Huddleston, Leonard Cohen, John Glenn, Craig Sager, and George Michael.

And that's it! Let's all try harder next year in 2017. Maybe we'll forget about what will happen on January 20th. See you next year. - Jonathan Sim
