Post Malone is a controversial figure, not so much in that his actions have caused division amongst fans, but more so in the way his meteoric rise to fame seemed to be birthed out of the very same ethereal nowhere that most of his music resides in. #Music scholars and casual listeners alike are both struggling to comprehend the viral popularity of his breakthrough single "White Iverson."
A contract with Republic Records and a few singles later, Post Malone was a nigh household name despite never having released a proper album. Post had a lot to prove with his debut studio effort and with Stoney he assuredly sticks the landing. Not sure if it's worth a chance? Here are 5 good reasons why you should check it out:
1. It's pure melody from start to finish
I'd argue that one of the reasons that Post has been such a viral success is that he has a knack for crafting the most devilish kind of ear worms; he excels in creating these half-murmured melodies that slink into your subconscious and stay lodged there for days like a half remembered dream. Stoney is replete with some of the catchiest melodies in pop or hip hop.
2. New beat from Pharrell
It's never too soon for another musical masterpiece from Pharrell and "Up There," his contribution to Stoney, is an immaculately bouncy, laid back banger; the kind of song you'd throw on while driving down a sunlit road or a moonlit way.
3. "Leave" will leave you breathless
Most of the songs on Stoney are high quality goods but the clear standout for this writer is "Leave," a song that defies genre and becomes a rhythmic, propulsive power ballad if there ever was such a thing in hip hop. The instrumentation and vocal chanting provide a platform from which Post croons painfully about love lost. It's immaculate and one of the best songs of 2016.
Don't sleep on Stoney. If this is any indication of things to come, Post Malone has a long career ahead of him.
