Note: This article contains light spoilers for Power Rangers.
The new Power Rangers movie is all set to land in a neon blaze of burning nostalgia on March 24, but just how much does the shiny new flick pay homage to the original series?
Aside from all of the mega-obvious throwbacks, such as the main villains (who could forget Rita Repulsa?!) and the colors of the rangers, there are plenty of other Easter Eggs that hark back to the original series. Check out the list below and see how many you remember.
1. Go, Go Power Rangers!
Remember the rocking original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers theme song? If not, take a long, hard look at yourself and rewatch the classic intro below:
Although the song has had a major revamp since it shredded out of our '90s TV screens, you can still hear echoes of the original music at the very end of the movie trailer below:
2. Billy's Power Pencils
In this blink-and-you'll-miss-it-moment, Billy lines up his coloring pens in the colors of all of the original rangers, including white and green.
3. My, How Bulk And Skull Have Changed
Anyone who remembers leaping out of bed to hammer their youthful eyes full of #PowerRangers goodness will recall that bullying was a central theme of the show.
In the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series, Bulk and Skull were the school thugs you loved to hate (and, of course see their comeuppance), and it looks like there are plenty of bullies and thugs to see get theirs in the new movie, including two female locker-room bullies and a red-headed aggressor. Could these be Bulk and Skull's 2017 counterparts?
4. Flashbacks To Angel Grove
While everyone remembers the sheer power of the Zords and the iconic skintight Power Ranger suits, lots of people who watched the original show might not remember where it was set. If you're among them, don't be too hard on yourself, you were probably about six years old at the time!
The new movie takes us right back to the Power Rangers' old haunt, and while it has clearly been modernized beyond recognition, it's still Angel Grove by name as an awesome throwback. 5. Paying Homage To The Fallen
In a heartfelt Easter Egg, Yellow Ranger Trini sports a T-shirt printed with the year 1973. This was the year of birth of the original Yellow Ranger Thuy Trang, who tragically died in a car accident in 2001.
6. Alpha 5: Upgraded
Sentient robot Alpha 5's hardware update is so extensive and cool that fans might have struggled to recognize him at first, but the nervous bot is definitely back. The voice of Alpha 5 will be provided by comic actor Bill Hader. Aye yai yai yai yai yai yai!
7. Powered Up Power Coins
Sure, the Power Coins might look a little different, but they still have the same effect on the rangers by causing them to wriggle into the morph suits, albeit with much better special effects.
In a fitting tribute to the original series, the Power Coins will once again be branded with images of their respective Zord animal, which will be viewable when the coins glow with the color of the ranger they belong to.
Power Rangers will hit cinemas across the US on March 24. It's morphin' time!
