The seemingly cursed year of 2016 recently claimed another icon with the passing of Carrie Fisher, an actress/writer best known for the role of #PrincessLeia in the Star Wars franchise. After the initial shock of Fisher's death had passed, one of the first questions fans asked was how Star Wars will handle Fisher's absence in upcoming films. While she had reportedly completed filming for 2017's Episode VIII, she was expected to reprise her role once more in Episode IX, currently slated for release in 2019.
Thankfully, there are options.
A CGI Leia?
In a sad twist, a partial solution to the problem could lie in the recently released Star Wars anthology film #RogueOne. Through some very clever digital effects, the film managed to include the likenesses of #PeterCushing as Grand Moff Tarkin, and a younger Carrie Fisher as Leia. This was done with a mixture of motion capture and CGI, super imposing the recreated faces of Cushing and Fisher over actors Guy Henry and Ingvild Deila.
Understandably, the choice to include the likeness of Cushing, who passed away in 1994, has raised some serious ethical concerns. Fans are already begging that producers do not choose to use a digitally recreated Carrie Fisher in Episode IX. I agree that it may be too soon, and if the effect is used, it should be done very sparingly, perhaps as a simple final goodbye to Princess Leia.
Or maybe, it is best just to let Carrie rest, and let the crown pass. Possibly, even, to the biggest legacy she left behind.
Expand The Role Of Lt. Connix
Carrie Fisher's daughter, #ScreamQueens actress Billie Lourd, appeared briefly in The Force Awakens as a character known as Lieutenant Connix. Both Leia and Connix are said to have expanded roles in Episode VIII. For Connix, scripts could be tweaked to continue this expanded role into Episode IX, possibly pushing her up in the chain of command to fill the role left vacant by Leia's absence.
What better way to honor Carrie's legacy than to let her own daughter fill her position in the franchise that made her famous? Maybe, the new Star Wars could boost Billie's career as the original trilogy boosted her Mother's.
Rest in peace, Carrie. May The Force Be With You.
