While Tom Holland is currently working his butt off reprising his role of Spider-Man in the upcoming #SpiderManHomecoming, fans are still fairly disappointed in the lack of fan favorite character, Miles Morales on the big screen.
This past summer, it was confirmed that Donald Glover was going to be cast in the film and since he provided the voice of Morales in #UltimateSpiderman, fans were hoping for the same in live-action. Unfortunately Marvel Studios thought it would be unwise for a 33-year-old man to play a young teenager. However, there might be a light at the end of the tunnel after all.
On top of Sony working with Marvel Studios to give us the live-action Spider-Man in the #MCU, they have also been working on an animated #SpiderMan film. A newly released casting call from Backstage seems to imply that this animated Spider-Man movie will follow Miles Morales instead of the usual Peter Parker. Here are a couple of character descriptions from the casting call that seem to point to this being the case:
"(Lead) Terrence: a young African-American/Puerto Rican teen from Brooklyn; he is new to this suburban school and now feeling out of place, overwhelmed, pressured with new responsibilities, and dealing with puberty; while trying to fit in he must do his best to stay out of trouble; along the way in developing his identity he's losing old friends but now making a new one, Pete. (Supporting) Pete: a young, slightly geeky, Asian-American teen; he's smart, sweet, and encouraging; although very unlike any of the friends Terrence had in his old Brooklyn neighborhood, Pete proves to be a good fit for Terrence making good decisions."
Anyone who is familiar with the Morales character can see similarities to the Terrence character as they are both half African American and Puerto Rican and from Brooklyn. The description for his supporting character, Pete also seems pretty similiar to his best friend Ganke Lee from the comics.
Before Tom Holland was announced to be playing Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War, there was a pretty big fan campaign to have #MilesMorales be the focus of #Marvel's version of the famed wall-crawler. When that didn't pan out, fans started speculating that the upcoming animated film was going to follow the adventures of the Morales character, which now seems much more plausible.
Unfortunately, we don't know a whole lot more about the project, except that it will be released theatrically and is going to be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed The LEGO Movie and are currently working on the young Han Solo Star Wars movie. No news of casting for the characters have been announced or released either but after the release of this casting call, it shouldn't be too far away now. The animated Spider-Man movie is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2018.
