#BenAffleck said recently that The Batman isn't a set thing and if it doesn't come together in a way he think he thinks is great than he isn't going to do it. He also said there isn't a set script for the film and frankly I think he's a great liar. I think Warner Brothers is banking on this movie and they already have a few notable actors like J.K Simmons playing Commissioner Gordon and Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke lined up to appear in the film. I think Ben Affleck is just scared to tell the public that he thinks he knows how to make the perfect Bat-film because of the response of both Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad. Ben Affleck has a huge amount of pressure not to mess up one of the most beloved if not the most beloved comic book hero. Ben Affleck is also the first person to direct a comic book movie with two Oscars under his belt with one for the best original screenplay for Good Will Hunting and best picture for Argo , The expectation for him to direct a cinematic experience with The Batman is through the roof. I think it isn't going to be a walk in the park for him and the people helping him make it and i'm sorry for making you sip grannies peach tea but the DCEU has made it difficult to make a great Batman story.
You might think I'm spewing blasphemy but I think Zack Snyder and David Ayer both hindered Affleck with their many absurd character representation of famous comic book characters. I think Ben Affleck can fix it and I'm sure he has surrounded himself with great minds to make a great Bat-flick but as a die hard Batman fan I must say- I'm nervous. Here is my list of things Ben Affeck must fix about the bat for his Batman film.
1. Batman Isn't A Loner- The Justice League Isn't His First Family
The Nolan franchise is many peoples view of the character and for the older audiences Keaton's Batman is the view for some but none of those franchises capture one of the most important aspects of Batman- his Bat family. James Gordon , Barbara Gordon , Dick Grayson , Jason Todd , Tim Drake , Selina Kyle to some people those are just names of characters but in my eyes and many others they are different aspects of what makes Batman... Batman.
We never had a actual ensemble #Batman film and it looks like Justice League is going to be the first film Batman is on a actual team instead of going on a solo adventure. I think it would be a missed opportunity to not fully utilize Batman supporting cast in his solo venture and I'm not talking about only using one Robin , If Ben Affleck wants to make a perfect Bat-flick he needs to do things fans and movie goers haven't seen on the big screen and that is showing audiences that Batman isn't a orphaned son seeking vengeance. Batman was a orphaned son who once wanted vengeance but learned he needed to be a father and a friend to broken people like him so they wouldn't make the same mistakes he did.
I'm not saying utilize characters like Bat-Wing , Ace and Bat woman just yet but show the world why the names Dick Grayson , Barbara Gordon ,Tim Drake and Jason Todd are important. Batman isn't always a raging brute , he's a mentor , leader and father to many.
Also it would be great if they casted Emma Stone as Barbara Gordon , Steven Yeun as Nightwing , Ryan Potter as Tim Drake and Anna Kendrick as Carrie Kelly. That last sentence was pure bias picks but I think its important to cast a set of actors and actresses who can exude a certain presence of charisma that this take of Batman desperately needs.
2. Fix Gotham City
From what we have seen so far from Gotham City in the DCEU its basically just Metropolis 2. The Ultimate Cut of Batman V Superman barely captured the actual horrors of Gotham and Suicide Squad barely touched on the city either. Granted it might be because they are saving it for the Batman film but Ben needs to make the city feel like it sprouted out of the pages of some of Batmans most iconic tales.
There have been many representation of the iconic city in comics , films and video games. Tim Burton had the noir feel with gothic architecture , the Bruce Timm cartoon had the art deco look , Schumacher made Gotham look like a bright light amusement park that was later borrowed in the Arkham Knight game and Nolan's Gotham was basically New York, Toronto ,Chicago , Pittsburgh and wherever else he filmed the city shots for his trilogy.
Ben Affleck needs to breathe life in Gotham by making the city its own character. This shouldn't be just any modern day city like the Nolan trilogy Gotham nor should this be a dark edgy Gotham- This Gotham needs to be the lovechild of all the Gothams before it. My dream of Gotham is Ben Affleck's The Town meets Ridley Scott Blade Runner's bright neon dystopian city meets The Warriors style of New York over the top masked gang violence.
My dream version of Gotham would look similar to the city in Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira film which is based on the legendary manga Akira , granted I don't want it to be futuristic looking but the grotesque neon lit dystopian metropolitan city filled with masked villains would be perfect. Akira took a lot setting ques from Blade Runner and The Warriors so hopefully I painted you the perfect picture of what I think Gotham should look like.
3. Give Us The Yellow Oval Logo On The Costume
Nolan and Snyder have a fixation on the plain black bat logo. Granted Zack Snyder's fixation comes from a better place since its obvious he got the inspiration from the Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns version of Batman,it was fine for his Batman V Superman film but I think they should always change the suit each film. Snyder is using a different Bat suit for #JusticeLeague but it still has the giant bat logo seen in The Dark Knight Returns.
I do think Snyder has done an exception job giving Batman some cool looking suits but I think Ben Affleck needs to bring back the yellow oval logo for some flare. In a generation were movie fans go crazy over nostalgic things brought back like seeing the Milinum falcon or a movie using the ghost buster logo even if its terrible , I'm sure people will freak out with just a glimpse Ben Affleck donning that iconic logo.
4. The Rogues Must Be Fixed
Batman is known mostly for his iconic rogues gallery and so far they have been misrepresented in the DCEU.
For starters why is Killer Croc a black stereotype ? A hood wearing , BET obsessed and trap influenced character. I am a fan of the monstrous Croc from the Arkham games and Jim Lee's art in Hush. David Ayer made every character a stereotype or a Hot Topic fashion craze character and sometimes it worked but most of the time it dramatically misfired. Killer Croc was barely used and when he was it was for this awkward comedic relief. Killer Croc is supposed to be a menacing brute with a dramatic backstory but in Sucide Squad he never felt more like a stereotype than a character. David Ayer basically gave us a generic Drax from Guardians of The Galaxy.
The abusive relationship between Joker and Harley was either not shown on purpose because all the flashbacks could of have been false memories Harley is showing us or this version of the relationship is nothing like what we were taught. In Sucide Squad the character is in love with her Mr.J which is a norm but in the comics she is basically a victim of stockholm syndrome.
Joker doesn't love Harley and only used her as bait , playmate or something to beat on when he is mad.In #SuicideSquad you can't really fault her for being in love with a guy who basically showed her purpose and rescued her twice. Harley was never seen getting physically or mentally abused by her puddin. Which leads me to... Mr.J himself.
Jared Leto's was a mixed bag for many people and at times the Oscar winning actor was doing strange things that never made me afraid of his character. I don't know if was the directing or something Jared Leto thought would work but everything came off as forced and really try hard. I see Ben Affleck as Batman and I'm truly scared of the physical presence of his character , I question if this Joker can stand a chance against his Batman. I love the fearless approach of Ayer and Leto in wanting to give us something we haven't seen before but it turned out to be something we never want to see again. I don't even put this on the shoulders of Leto because he was only in the film for like 8 minutes and even the extended cut didn't give the amount of Joker we were expected to get. I truly think Leto give us a remarkable take on the Joker and I think his Joker character needs to be softly rebooted.
Leto looked in the wrong places when he was trying to find inspiration for his Joker character. Jared Leto said in an interview a lot of his Joker was inspired the legendary David Bowie.
I admire his admiration and effort but it didn't work. I think Jared Leto shouldn't take inspiration from Cesar Romero , Jack Nicholson or Heath Ledger because it would just cause a identity crisis because all three of those actors represent different facets of the character. I think if you want this Joker to be just as menacing as Ben's Batman you need to make him like the most dangerous version of the character.
I think Ben Affleck and Jared Leto need to get the legendary Mark Hamill on set to truly show them what a menacing joker looks like. You can't have a perfect Batman movie without a perfect Joker who shows the other side of the coin. Jared Leto is an Oscar winning actor who deserves a second chance and I think from drawing inspiration from The Joker he will definitely get the redemption he deserves.
5. Batman Must Not Kill
Batman has killed people in almost every single one of his films on screen so I hate when people point the figure solely on Snyder- even though he made the same idiotic misrepresentation of a iconic character. If you ok with this than answer me this one question..
Why is Joker or any of the of homicidal characters roaming Gotham still alive ?
If your still ok with it than watch this.
If your still ok with this than your basically a fan of the Earth-2 Thomas Wayne version of Batman or you think Batman should be like the Earth-51 version of the character which after the death of Jason Todd he killed the Joker and went on to killing every other villain Gotham until he became almost like the Big Brother in the novel 1984. Batman has killed in the comics but that makes him less interesting of a character because if he kills what makes him different from Marvel's Punisher. Batman is supposed to the must mentally strong character in comics and a sociopath because he dresses up as a Bat while crippling you , breaking your bones and punishing you without ending your life. Batman is the judge not the executioner. Batman is justice not crime. Ben Affleck needs to write a nice monologue for The Batman explaining the no kill rule to settle this debate and firmly cement why Batman is Batman.
I hoped you guys enjoyed this read regardless if you agree and I hope you are as just excited as I am for The Batman.
