The past few Nintendo consoles, such as the Wii and Wii U, have done a lot. Not only were we allowed to play video games, but we could watch YouTube and Netflix, among other streaming apps, as well as communicate online and even go on the Internet. The big question is, will the Nintendo Switch continue that trend?

The answer is no. At least for now.

No More Streaming Apps

According to Nintendo, they wish to make the Switch 100% for gaming. They don’t want the console to mimic what you can do on your phone or tablet. The Switch will be, first and foremost, a gaming platform.

While it will be nice to have a console solely for playing games, I was surprised Nintendo decided to do without Netflix and especially YouTube. I’ll be the first to admit that I use my Wii U to watch YouTube most of the time and I think others do as well. Of course, they said it wouldn’t be available “at launch.” So, who knows? Maybe they’ll add it sometime down the road.

No Backwards Compatibility

The Nintendo Switch will be using cartridges for their games going back to the old school way of things. That being said, there’s no disc drive in the console. Any games that you have bought for your Wii and Wii U will not be playable on the Switch. So, be sure to keep that Wii U in good shape if you wish to replay those games in the future!

As of right now, virtual console downloads are up in the air. But I do hope they add that in soon!

No Bundled Games

In the past, Nintendo consoles have come out either with just the system itself or it came bundled with a game. The Wii was bundled with games such as Wii Sports or Mario Kart while the Wii U was bundled with games such as Super Mario Maker or Super Mario Bros. 3D World.

According to Nintendo, the Switch will not be bundled with any games and there are no plans to do so at this time. Every console and marketing strategy is different, but in the eyes of a customer, I feel as though we should get a game included with the console for the $300 price.

What Do You Think?

I still believe the Nintendo Switch is going to be a great console and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. However, I am disappointed we won’t be able to play older games on the console and get a new game for free along with the console.

Then again, things may change in the future.
