The Book of Life might is an under-appreciated gem. I know people liked it and I am not claiming it is a classic but it is pretty good. It also might not be mentioned as one of the best animated films of the last 5 years and I think it is.
It is about a musician in Mexico who dies and comes back from the land of the dead for his one true love. The rulers of the realms of the dead, La Muerte and Xibalba, had a bet about him but Xibalba cheats. There are two realms of the dead, the Land of the Remembered, and the Land of the Forgotten. The land of the Forgotten is a bleak place.
Our hero Manolo, has a rival for his love, Maria. This rival is a soldier, Joaquin, and Maria feels she has to marry him so he will protect the village. Manolo also has to deal with his father wanting him to be a bullfighter instead of a musician.
Okay, the movie is not without flaws. There is a framing device with a woman at a museum telling the story to a group of children. (This explains why the characters look like marionette puppets.) Maybe the movie would have been better off without it.
The animation is beautiful, there are some nice original songs, and it is nice to see a major animated movie based off Mexican folklore. Also it is under 2 hours but doesn't feel rushed. The voice actors are good and include Ron Perlman, Channing Tatum,, Xoe Saldana, and Diego Luna .
It is worth watching or re-watching.
