(WARNING: This post contains potential spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Also none of this should be taken as fact, it is all speculation and theory.)
So, the first full trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hit YouTube a few days ago. It is already the second most viewed teaser ever (after Emma Watson's Beauty and the Beast) and its soundtrack, "Fox on the Run" by Sweet has topped the Classic Rock charts already. In this post I will be breaking down the #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2 teaser and full trailer. I will also lay down some basic theories on the plot and speculate about what is happening in the trailer.
Instead of doing this in the order that the scenes appear in the trailers, I will do it in the order of how I think they may happen in the film.
The full trailer opens on a place that looks like the Universal Church of Truth (top right). The Church of Truth was founded by Adam Warlock and has recently come up in one of the Guardians of the Galaxy comics storylines. We also know that Adam Warlock exists in the #MCU thanks to the cocoon seen in Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. Warlock is often associated with the Soul Gem, the last infinity stone in the MCU that we do not know the location of. Throughout the two trailers we see the guardians fight some sort of giant space octopus at this location.
It has been revealed that Elizabeth Debicki's character, Ayesha (more about her later), has hired the Guardians — now galaxy-wide heroes — to take down the monster. The giant golden orbs might be some sort of portals for meetings of the church. Ayesha is supposedly the main villain of the movie and this may be because the Guardians fail in this fight. We also see Drax in what looks like the inside of the beast at the 1-minute mark.
The next place that turns up in these trailers is some sort of prison that Yondu, Rocket, and little baby Groot seem to be breaking in or out of. Theories have been circulating that they are breaking Nebula (bottom left) out of captivity. The official poster (at the bottom of this post) shows her joining the Guardians and becoming one of the good guys. Though the people that seem to be floating around look like ravagers and Baby Groot has a ravager uniform (check out the badge on his left arm).
I think that Yondu has led the ravagers, joined by Baby Groot and Rocket, on a nondescript breakout mission, but when they find out that they are breaking out Thanos's daughter, they mutiny against Yondu. You can see Yondu's weapon of choice, his Yaka Arrow zipping around, killing the floating ravagers. You can see the arrow in the top left shot and in the background in the middle right picture, you can also see Yondu whistling in the top right frame. This will also add to the fact that the ravagers are bad guys in the movie. Also, "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls has supposedly been added to the soundtrack, and this would just be a perfect scene for this.
Next up, the forest planet. As seen in the frame in the bottom right, these three Guardians have crashed on this planet after a big space fight (at the 47-second mark of the full trailer), possibly against the Ravagers who are hunting Drax, Quill, and Gamora (maybe hired by Ayesha after the guardians failed to defeat the giant octopus thing). When they are attacked by the Ravagers (having mutinied earlier), Rocket blows them up with the blue bomb (top right). This may be because Rocket, Groot, and Yondu are tracking down Sylvester Stallone's ravager character (still a mystery thanks to very secretive casting).
There are rumors going round that this forest planet is, in fact, Peter Quill's father, Ego the living planet. This has not been confirmed or has any particularly good reasoning behind it other than the fact that we do not see Kurt Russell's Ego in the trailer.
The fourth and final location is what looks like underground in a planet, possibly the forest planet or Knowhere (though I doubt that). The three images on the right look like they will all be in sequence before a fight near the middle or end of the movie. We know that these six frames are all in the same place because of the middle right frame. At the beginning of the full trailer we see the bomb that Groot runs away with set off, which will probably be at the climax of the fight.
How The Plot Could Play Out
So the theory is that after the Guardians fail to defeat the giant squid (being hired to do so by Ayesha), Rocket and Groot join the Ravagers to break Nebula out of captivity. When the Ravagers find out who they are breaking out, however, they mutiny against Yondu, lead by Sylvester Stallone's character. The Ravagers are then hired by Ayesha to take down Drax, Gamora, and Star-Lord, but their ship crashes on the forest planet. Rocket and Groot, who are hunting down Stallone's character, meet the other three Guardians on this planet and team up against the Ravagers. After they defeat the Ravagers, Ayesha (in cooperation with Stallone's character) hires yet another team to take down the Guardians, now fully reunited.
A little more on Ayesha. Ayesha (who will be played by Elizabeth Debicki), also known as Kismet, Her, or Paragon is the leader of a genetically perfect race of humanoids. She is related to Adam Warlock and her cells act as cosmic batteries, allowing her to absorb, store, and release cosmic energy. She has a very long and complicated backstory that you can read more about here, but she will probably be changed a lot for the cinematic portrayal.
Finally, the last scene of the full trailer. The scene depicts Mantis, one of the new Guardians telling the group about Quill's love for Gamora after sensing his feelings. Mantis is Quill's half-sister by Ego (who we are assuming can make himself avatars that are human-sized to have children and does so out of loneliness) and, as shown, can sense feelings through touch. She has grown up with her father her whole life but meets the Guardians somewhere that is not the forest planet (debunking the idea that the planet is Ego). She also has the power to communicate with plants, survive in space, discharge energy blasts, and has limited powers of flight.
Last of all, I have absolutely no idea what this is but please let me know of any ideas in the comments:
What other ways do you think the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 could play out?
