*This post contains potential spoilers for the ongoing DCEU Justice League which will premiere on 16th November 2017.

The new Justice League trailer dropped earlier today and it is awesome. We see tonnes of new footage and, as always, speculation and theories have hit the web. The shows us lots more of , , and . Though we do see a lot of everyone including and even Commissioner Gordon, there is not much footage of or (though we have and will see lots more of them in the ever-expanding ). In this post, I will break down what I think could be happening in the trailer and explain Steppenwolf and the Mother Boxes. At the end, there is also a theory on who Batman was working with before Justice League.

The trailer picks up with () riding a horse (as you can see in the two left frames) through somewhere very cold and looking down on an extremely small fishing village (below). This is probably where he finds Aquaman () and tries to recruit him to the League. I think this is most likely British Columbia because we know that Aquaman 'comes in on the king tide' (thanks to the first trailer) and this place looks very cold. Also, it seems like this whole movie will be pretty much based in North America with only some of it taking place with the Amazons and Atlanteans.

We see a scene from the first trailer (top right) and Aquaman saving a man from drowning (presumably because of the king tide). He carries the man into a bar and takes a bottle of whisky from the bar. In the exclusive comic con footage, we saw him finish this bottle before going into the ocean. This could be clever editing or it could mean that he is just saving lots of people that are injured and drowning thanks to the king tide. This would lead onto Bruce finding Aquaman (a.k.a. ) and the 'so I hear you can talk to fish' scene from the previously seen comic con footage.

The Aquaman

Arthur Curry is very prominent in this trailer and it looks like he will play an important part in the film. He is shown to be bad-ass both in (left middle) and out of water (right middle) in this trailer and we even see and some Atlanteans (bottom right). Mira is the queen of Atlantis in the comics and is married to Arthur but I think she will be more of a right-hand man in this film. We know that Aquaman is already king of Atlantis when the movie starts but rumours have suggested that he will not be in a relationship with Mira. I also think that the visit to Atlantis will probably have some sort of connection with the Mother Boxes (but more on that later).

To add to the introduction of Mira as a new character, we also see Commissioner Gordon (Played by ) speak for the first time. This happens in the 'dressed like a bat. I dig it.' scene. Not only does this scene introduce Commissioner Gordon but it also shows how Aquaman will be a little comic relief in the movie because he is such an outsider to human customs.

Cyborg

We see a lot more of Victor Stone as Cyborg than we have so far. I imagine that this is partially because they have now had a lot more time to touch up the CGI for his body. The two scenes that really stand out for Cyborg are the bottom right scene in which we see a little of his backstory and the bottom left scene. This scene shows Cyborg wearing a helmet which would seem to be for flying particularly high (as seen in the next shot).

As Wonder Woman explains through voice over, Cyborg is made up of 'organic and biomechatronic body parts'. It looks like he will have very robotic in speech and motion throughout the movie because we have not yet heard him speak other than the 'you should probably move' scene (middle right frame). I hope that this is not kept up for the entirety of the film because I feel like it would get extremely annoying after just a few scenes. Also, Cyborg's bromance with the Flash in this trailer suggests that he will be playing a reasonably big part in the upcoming Flash standalone film.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman has very little screentime in this trailer. This is probably due to the fact that the Wonder Woman film will premiere so soon and all of the trailers for it have already dropped. Other than voice over and a brief bit of dialogue, she is seen fighting some of Darkseid's parademons (top right) and an unknown man in a suit and gloves (left). Also, the bottom left scene, she attacks the gloved man's legs with a slide in a very similar fashion to her attacking unnamed Nazis in the Wonder Woman trailer (bottom right). This could just be a nod to the past or more of a signature move that we will see quite often. It also looks like Diana and Bruce will be taking the leadership roles in the League (as can be seen top right).

The Flash

We see a lot of Barry Allen () as the in this trailer. This is partially because they are trying to set up his standalone movie and also because he is one of the more impressive-looking characters (especially with the lightning CGI). We saw how, in the comic con footage, we will see his powers through his eyes, with time slowing down for the viewers. In this trailer, however, we see more of how his powers look from the perspective of everyone else. The effects for this are amazing and I hope that they will keep up this level of quality for the film.

I do not know quite how they will change his backstory but we do see his father in prison in this trailer and, in the comics, his father is wrongly imprisoned for having killed his wife (when it was, in fact, Reverse Flash). I hope that we do not see another incarnation of Reverse Flash on film because he is quite a weak character and is not as serious as the rest of the DCEU. Let me know what you think in the comments.

The Batman

Purely judging by this trailer and the comic con footage, Batman will be very much the main character for this movie and will take the role of leader of the League. I don't know whether this will persist after Superman is resurrected (especially after Batman basically winning in Batman Vs Superman). The two biggest Batman-related things we see in this trailer are his tactical suit (middle left) and his new Batmobile/Bat-tank (bottom two frames). We have already seen his tactical suit in the photos released late last year but this new vehicle is something completely new. It looks to be some sort of armoured wall-crawler built specifically for fighting the parademons but it will not replace the Batmobile. I hope this new vehicle is used heavily throughout the film purely just because it is so awesome and I want to see it in action.

The Justice League

One of the stand-out scenes in the trailer is the above scene that hits at the 70-second mark. It is basically just a shot of the League lined up getting ready for battle. I think that Superman might actually be in this scene, stood to the right of Wonder Woman, purely because there is seemingly no one there when it seems like there should be.

Steppenwolf and the Mother Boxes

The above frame is from a cut scene from Batman Vs Superman and shows Steppenwolf holding three Mother Boxes. I am not sure of this but I think it is some sort of hologram that connects back to when three Mother Boxes were lost in a war against the heroes of Earth (the Atlanteans and the Amazons). I think this scene was probably cut because they decided to change Steppenwolf's look.

For those who do not know, Steppenwolf is the main villain of Justice League and Darkseid will not actually appear. Steppenwolf will be played by CiarĂ¡n Hinds and we have not yet seen him in any trailers, behind the scenes photos, or promo-footage (presumably due to late casting and costume design changes). He led the battle against Earth in the Apokolips War under the command of Darkseid. This war was won by Earth and three Mother Boxes (which I will explain next) were lost. One Mother Box went to the Atlanteans, one to the Amazons, and one to a third party who is some sort of mysterious warrior and ancient one.

The Parademons [Credit: Warner Bros.]
The Parademons [Credit: Warner Bros.]

The parademons are actually what we see the most of in the trailer and are minions to Darkseid and Steppenwolf. The top four frames depict members of the League fighting off parademons. The bottom two frames, on the other hand, show Amazons fighting parademons. I think this is probably the Apokolips War because this fight is too massive (almost as big as Helm's Deep) to be taking place in the modern day of the DCEU. If this battle is the Apokolips War then the Amazons are probably accompanied by a lot of Atlanteans because there are nowhere near as many Amazons as in the bottom left frame. Let me know in the comments if you have another theory as to what this battle is.

Finally, the Mother Boxes are 'living computers' that have abilities unknown to anybody. As previously mentioned, they were lost to the 'people' of Earth after the Apokolips War. They have powers ranging from teleportation to energy manipulation to healing. They can even change the gravitational constant of an area! I think that they can be seen teleporting a parademon (bottom left) in the trailer (top right) but I am not 100% (let me know what you think in the comments). I am not sure what significance they will have in this movie but they will probably be the cause of Steppenwolf coming to Earth.

Will There Be A 'Nightwing' DCEU Movie

This theory stemmed from the aforementioned 'I dig it scene' when Commissioner Gordon says 'it's nice to see you working well with others again'. The word that really stands out is 'again'. It suggests that Batman had worked well with someone before and had not for a long time. This would connect well with the Jason Todd (bottom right) from that suggested that The Joker (middle bottom) had already killed Jason Todd's Robin and teased a Red Hood movie. This was confirmed in the explanaition of Harley Quinn's backstory when the text in the scene says that she was an 'accomplice to the murder of Jason Todd' . Because, in the comics, Dick Grayson's Robin came before Jason Todd's, we can assume that Nightwing (top left) either existed or exists in the DCEU already. This also means that we can assume Red Hood (top middle) will or does exist in the DCEU.

This could mean one of two things, The DC executives are trying to set up a Bat-family (bottom left) - Batman is, of course, DC's most reliably successful character - or they are setting up a live-action adaption of 'A Death In The Family' (top right). Let me know what you think of this theory in the comments.

I hope you liked this post and will share it and leave a comment to let me know what you think. Be sure to check out my theory on why Iron Man will die in 'Avengers: Infinity War' or my trailer breakdowns for 'Guardians of the Galaxy', 'Alien: Covenant', 'Blade Runner 2049', and 'Wonder Woman'. I also have a recent post on the end-credit scene from 'Kong: Skull Island' for the Godzilla fans.
