Late last night, #JamesGunn tweeted that he wanted to do a #MoonKinght movie. There have been rumours for 6 months of a Moon Knight #Netflix #TVShow (which, of course, would contribute to the #MCU) that could be in the works, possibly coming out in 2018. This post is a rundown of everything we know and many possibilities, including #Casting, directors, and scheduling.
Who is Moon Knight?
Moon Knight A.K.A. Marc Spencer is the son of a rabbi whose family fled Europe in the 1930s to escape the holocaust. Spencer became a heavyweight boxer, a U.S. Marine, and finally, a CIA operative. His brother Randall also joined the CIA but betrayed the agency, selling weapons to both sides in an altercation in Italy. When Marc's lover Lisa heard about Randall's plan, he killed her with a meat cleaver. Marc then pursued to hunt his brother down and inflict injuries unto him that drove him insane. Marc then became a mercenary and spent several years as a gun for hire. In these years he developed combat skills including becoming a martial art expert, acrobat, gymnast, and pilot.
Using the money he earned from his years as a mercenary to create 2 new identities. One as a New York billionaire in order to make contacts with influential people, and one as a New York Taxi driver in order to make contacts on the street. He developed a ring of people to help him find out what was happening in the world of crime. Marlene, Marc's new lover helped Marc with the psychological issues caused by multiple identities. She also helped design the Moon Knight costume. His multiple personalities actually give him immunity to some psychic assault. As Moon Knight, Specter (though no longer going by that name) gains enhanced strength, endurance, and reflexes at night, reaching his pinnacle during a full moon, and sometimes has prophetic visions. It is disputed as to how he acquired these abilities but it is assumed that he received them after being resurrected at the feet of a statue of Khonshu, the moon god. His signature weapons are nunchucks and a moon-shaped boomerang/knife.
Since May last year, rumours have been circulating about the potential for three major Netflix shows: #Blade, #GhostRider, and Moon Night. These rumours were all but drowned out, Ghost Rider appeared in Marvel's #AgentsOfShield, Blade 4 was announced (kind of), and Moon Knight was said to be cancelled (though not officially)... until now! After James Gunn's tweets (more on that later), the Moon Knight show could be back in the works.
The Moon Knight show would be the darkest show yet and would probably contribute to the Defenders timeline. I think that, because the Defenders are a group of heroes and #Punisher is excluded. He is, after all, an anti-hero. This could mean that Moon Knight will eventually team up with Punisher and possibly another new anti-hero to form a new team, solely made up of anti-heroes.
Who Will Be Cast As Moon Knight?
The casting of Moon Knight is a precarious matter, the actor must fit the part, and have the acting ability to portray a man with schizophrenia, including several very different characters. The actor would also have to be physically capable enough to perform stunts (though it could be done with a stunt man thanks to Moon Knight's mask) but also bulky enough to pass as a heavyweight boxer. Here are some of my picks for actors that could portray the part:
#AndrewLincoln (The Walking Dead, Love Actually) is talented, shown purely by the range of movies he has acted in and characters he has portrayed. Though currently starring in 'TWD', Lincoln has a pretty busy schedule. This is debatable, however considering the length of time between seasons of the show. He has the acting capability and could bulk up (and would have to do so) to take the role. I think he would be a good choice.
#IdrisElba could be taking the mantle of #JamesBond after #DanielCraig, he would, however, if this is not true, fit well into the role. He can portray both an upper-class billionaire, as we saw in 'Pacific Rim' and a more on-the-streets kind of guy, as we saw in 'Bastille Day'. Though he is currently busy on Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower', that will no longer be the case after July at the latest. Elba also has the physique for the part and does seem to like acting in sci-fi/fantasy movie. I think that Elba would be the perfect actor for the role.
#TomHardy definitely has both the physique (as seen in The Dark Knight Rises and Warrior) for the part and the acting ability (as shown in Legend). Though he might not look the park, he has the perfect abilities (he can even box, after learning to do so for Warrior). Though he is currently working on 'Taboo' and will move onto 'Mad Max: The Wasteland', he would probably have time to film between or after. This is my least favourite candidate but would be a good casting decision.
Will James Gunn Direct?
The above tweet discussion occurred between MCU news and James Gunn occurred at 21:00 last night. As you can see, Gunn would like to direct a Moon Knight movie but is 'too busy'. Though not doing anything after #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2 (check out my trailer breakdown here), he says he is too busy. This either means that he means that Gunn simply means that he is too busy right now because he is in the post-production or he is working on something secretive. The only studio that Gunn would work for that would do something secretively is Marvel. He also never says in this tweet that Marvel said no, he simply says that he pitched the idea and is presumably waiting for feedback. This could mean that Marvel is actually considering a Moon Knight movie. If Gunn is too busy to direct the movie, he could simply direct an episode of the show whenever he has time (as shows do often share many directors). I would love to see David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en) or the Russo Brothers direct an episode or two.
When Would The Show Drop On Netflix?
Netflix has a pretty full slate including #IronFist, #ThePunisher, and #Defenders. Moon Knight would probably not start filming until mid-2017 or later, meaning it would probably not come out until 2019. 'The Punisher' is set to come out Q3 2017 and Defenders in July 2017.
I am very excited at the possibility of a Moon Knight Netflix show and am interested to see how James Gunn will do in a more serious movie (I have not yet seen #TheBelkoExperiment).
