(WARNING: This post contains potential spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Also, none of this should be taken as fact, it is all speculation and theory).
The 2017 #SuperBowl brought us a wave of new trailers and among them was a brand new #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy2 trailer packed full of new footage. From our first view of #ElizabethDebicki as #Ayesha to #Gamora with one of #RocketRaccoon's giant guns. In this post, I will break down all of the Easter Eggs and do some speculating as to what is happening in the trailer.
Ayesha And Her Race Of Perfect Beings
Throughout the beginning of the trailer we see Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha asking the Guardians 'Just who the hell do you think you are?' to which #ChrisPratt's #StarLord replies 'well...'. This not only sets the tone for the movie and trailer but also gives us our first look at the movie's main villain.
As I explained in my breakdown of the first trailer, Ayesha is also known as Kismet, Her, or Paragon and is the leader of a genetically perfect race of humanoids. She is a female clone of Adam Warlock and her cells act as cosmic batteries, allowing her to absorb, store, and release cosmic energy. She has a very long and complicated backstory that you can read more about here, but she will probably be changed a lot for the cinematic portrayal.
This scene is taking place in a very mysterious location but, as I mentioned in the previous breakdown, it looks a lot like the Universal Church of Truth and is evidently some sort of hearing hall for Ayesha, who is hiring the Guardians to kill the giant space squid that we saw in the first trailer. The Guardians probably fail in this fight, causing Ayesha to become the main villain and hunt them down.
Have We Already Met Ego The Living Planet?
One of the consistently appearing places throughout both trailers is this organic-looking planet that the big finale fight would seem to be taking place inside of. If you have watched the first trailer, you have probably read the theories saying that this is Ego the Living Planet (Star Lord's father whom we will probably see the first footage of in the final trailer). If these theories are true, the fight is probably taking place inside of him because Ayesha is trying to kill #PeterQuill's father as revenge for the giant space squid incident. This would mean that Ayesha's men (possibly the ravagers but more on that later) would probably have to go inside of him to try to destroy Ego's heart (presumably the only way to kill a planet). His heart could be what was seen in front of Star-Lord and Rocket as they jetpack off a ledge with Groot riding on Rocket's back (below and top two frames above).
This would also make sense because there would seem to be a theme of family throughout the movie (especially with Fleetwood Mac's The Chain playing over the back of the trailer). We can also see the Guardians gathered together as a family in the bottom left frame with Pom Klementieff as #Mantis in the front as a new member of the group.
Ridin' Around and Killin' Ravagers
We got some more Baby Groot footage in this last trailer and it lives up to the standard set in the first two trailers. It does seem that Groot will be riding around on people's shoulders for a lot of the film because we have seen a lot of that in the trailer (as can be seen in the bottom left and top right frames). Though Groot will be the child of the family that is the Guardians (quite literally) and Mantis will be a more figurative daughter to the group, it looks like he will be doing a lot of killing. He has, after all, killed at least one person and stolen a bomb in just the 5 minutes of footage that we have seen. I am very much looking forward to Groot and Rocket getting up to their usual trouble in the movie and hope that James Gunn's hint at a Groot/Rocket spin-off will become more than just a hint.
Taserface Is Finally Here
Before the first #GuardiansOfTheGalaxy came out #JamesGunn would always just jokingly answer questions about the potential characters with 'Taserface will be in it'. It was always a joke... until now! it looks like after the ravagers mutiny against Yondu and try to kill Nebula, Taserface (top left) will take lead. In this trailer, we also see a more complete and CGI-filled version of the 'Raining Men' scene with Yondu's Yaka Arrow fully in sight. This also looks to be the scene where Groot officially welcomes Yondu to the Guardians of the Galaxy.
I think that the ravagers will be hired by Ayesha to kill Star Lord - and maybe his father - because both are hunting down the Guardians and have a common interest through this. The Ravagers will obviously be happy to help because they will pretty much do anything for money and revenge (as we saw in the first film).
Beat The Bechdel Test
For those who don't know, the Bechdel Test is a test to see if a movie has strong female characters. The minimums to pass consist of these three rules: (1) the movie has to have at least two women in it, who (2) talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. This test is not perfect (for example Deepwater Horizon did not pass but had a very strong female protagonist and a realistic male to female ratio because it was based on an oil rig) but should still be at least taken notice of when making a movie. One of the main problems with the first #GOTG (and something that caused major backlash) was the lack of strong female characters. Though the movie passes the Bechdel Test, many complaints were centred around the over-sexualisation of Gamora. In response to these complaints, James Gunn himself tweeted this:
It looks like Gamora will be taking a bigger role in this movie in comparison to the last one (and bigger guns, as can be seen in the bottom left frame). I am happy to see some more developed female characters in the #MCU movies and am looking forward to Zoe Saldana being able to show off some actual acting ability.
Potential Plot Points
So the theory is that after the Guardians are hired to defeat the giant space squid and fail to do so, it goes on to either kill one of Ayesha's loved ones or just destroy the Church of Universal Truth. Rocket and Groot join the Ravagers to break Nebula out of captivity. When the ravagers find out who they are breaking out, however, they mutiny against Yondu, lead by Taserface. Meanwhile, the other three guardians are just chilling around the galaxy. They discover Mantis and either adopt her or give her a lift to the desert planet that can be seen briefly throughout both trailers. Ayesha makes her men, led by Sylvester Stallone's still unconfirmed character, hunt down Gamora, Drax, and Star-Lord. They find them on the desert planet and chase them to space, where the Milano (Quill's ship) crashes into the green forest planet. Meanwhile, Rocket and Co. have a big showdown against the ravagers on the more blue forest planet. After defeating the ravagers, Groot, Rocket, and Yondu (still accompanied by Nebula) discover a distress signal from the other Guardians. They go over to help and find out about the situation. This leads to an all-out battle between the Guardians of the Galaxy and the Ravagers (joined by Ayesha's men).
