Cuts, cuts, and more cuts — that's the news coming from the early screening of director Joss Whedon's fresh take on Zack Snyder's Justice League. It appears that Whedon's vision for Justice League doesn't include Kiersey Clemons' Iris West. According to Batman News, Iris will not be appearing in the upcoming #DCEU film, but she isn't the only DC character that didn't make the cut — or who got cut — she joins Jessie Eisnberg's Lex Luthor in the deleted scene tab.
While the process of cutting scenes may be Whedon's and Warner Bros. way of eliminating fillers, the chance of fans seeing Clemons' take on Iris won't happen anytime soon, or possibly ever.
A Minimal Role?
The DCEU #Flash movie still doesn't have a director, but Warner Bros. has revealed that the movie will be based on the Flashpoint storyline. In Flashpoint, her relationship with Barry isn't part of the story, and neither is she. Instead, she's relegated to a background character in an arc that shows the world on the brink of destruction. In this story, she is basically just a reporter that covers Central City's hero, Citizen Cold, while he wants to take her out.
In the case of the Flatliners star, with her Justice League scenes cut and her role in Flashpoint minimal, what motivation would she have to play a role that's not going to serve a purpose? After all, the casting of Clemons was no coincidence, since Rick Famuyiwa directed the actress in Dope ─ but now he's gone. In fact, Clemons didn't see herself being part of the superhero genre, but Justice League changed her mind.
" I’m so happy that I’ve been introduced to this genre because I didn’t really have any type of desire to be a part of any superhero world. And then I stepped on the set of Justice League and I was like, 'Holy sh*t. Alright!'
So, with all the changes to The Flash, and her scenes being cut from Justice League, I don't imagine a rising star like Clemons will sit around twiddling her thumbs. Although Iris wasn't the only victim of cut scenes, as we know that Lex will be returning one way or another, the same can't be said about Iris. It's a little disheartening when you consider how excited she was about her role in the movie ─ now her fans may never get to see what Clemons' depiction of Iris West would look like on the big screen.
Thankfully, you can catch the Disney-alumni in the upcoming Flatliners remake, September 29, 2017.
