2017 is here everyone! And what better way for me to kick off the new year than to give a look at my most anticipated movies of the year. We are in for such a great year for sure. Though the last few years according to critics were not as pleasing, I see differently. Let's dive right in and take a look at my top 10 most anticipated movies of 2017.
Hugh Jackman has been Wolverine for what seems like the longest time since 2000. When the trailer hit, I was about to tear up because this is Hugh Jackman's last official movie as Logan/Wolverine. But for sure, I am totally going to like this movie because of its stellar action and riveting story. And this being Jackman's last Wolverine/X-Men movie seems like the perfect send off to Wolverine and his storyline in the X-Men universe. And Patrick Stewart is also returning as Professor Xavier. Seems to me like this will take place after either X-Men Days of Future Past or The Wolverine. Either one or both? Who knows. Thank you Hugh Jackman. You were an excellent Wolverine.
9. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Ever since the fourth Pirates film came out, I thought that it would be the end of the line for Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. But now with five movies? Wow. This doesn't seem to end. Johnny Depp is back as Jack alongside fan faves Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner (who was absent in the last movie). Newcomers will include Javier Bardem (Skyfall) as the main antagonist Captain Salazar, Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner series) and Brenton Thwaites. Another adventure on the high seas? Sounds like a pirate's life for me for sure. Sure hope this one is better than the last one.
8. War for the Planet of the Apes
When I first saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes, I immediately fell in love with watching Andy Serkis as Caesar. But now we are at the third film in the rebooted franchise, and the anticipation just doesn't stop. I am confident that this one will take off right where Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ended and bring in a whole new scale of war between the apes and humanity. Serkis will return alongside newcomers Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn and Judy Greer. The apes going to war? What couldn't be better than that?
7. Wonder Woman
When I saw that Wonder Woman was going to be introduced on the big screen, I was so pumped!!! Gal Gadot is PERFECTION!!! She debuted as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman in last year's Batman v. Superman Dawn of Justice and she did it perfectly!!! Now here, Wonder Woman is finally getting her own movie this summer!!! It will be set in the DC Extended Universe and take place before she ever met Batman or Superman. Gal Gadot will return as Wonder Woman along with Chris Pine (Star Trek) as love interest Steve Trevor, Robin Wright (The Princess Bride; A Christmas Carol) as General Antiope, and Connie Nielsen as Diana's mother Queen Hippolyta. Danny Huston (X-Men Origins Wolverine), David Thewlis (Harry Potter), and Said Taghmaoui (GI JOE Rise of Cobra) also will star in unknown roles. A super hero film with a female lead? Yes please!!! And this is DC's version of Thor (if you get my drift).
6. Justice League
Think that Wonder Woman was the only DC movie on this list? Well no it is not!!! The Justice League are coming in. Though this is a bit rushed aside from competitor Marvel did with The Avengers back in 2012, I am eager enough to see Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the others come together on the big screen for the first time EVER!!! Zack Snyder will return to direct the film and Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa and Ray Fisher will all appear as the main Justice League reprising their roles from Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice alongside Jesse Eisenberg, Amy Adams, Connie Nielsen, Diane Lane and Jeremy Irons who will also return. Newcomers will include Ciaran Hinds as main antagonist Steppenwolf, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Valko and J.K. Simmons as James Gordon. Hopefully, DC will provide something even better with this ensemble cast when the film hits in November this year.
5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
When Guardians of the Galaxy came out back in 2014, I was a bit worried that this was to be Marvel's first flop. But it was an astonishing movie!!! It had me at the edge of my seat from start to finish. Now in May, we are going to be getting Vol. 2 of the Guardians' adventures. It will be directed by James Gunn once again. Returning cast will include Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker and Glenn Close. New cast members will include Kurt Russell, Elizabeth Debicki, Pom Klemintieff and Chris Sullivan. And the film is said to be based on Star-Lord's late mother's gift to him which was a tape with more 80's songs. Maybe there will be more of that stuff within.
4. Spider-Man Homecoming
Now I know what your thinking. And yes I know there have been several versions to Spider-Man. But he is by far one of cinema's most memorable heroes. And when Tom Holland debuted as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in last year's Captain America: Civil War, everyone loved him!!! Now Spidey is getting his own movie set within the already expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of Phase 3. Tom Holland will return in the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man alongside Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man, newcomers Michael Keaton as main antagonist Adrian Toomes/Vulture, Donald Glover, Kenneth Choi (also in Captain America The First Avenger) and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May. He does whatever a spider can and catch criminals while living in a world of heroes!!! Super pumped!!!
3. Thor: Ragnarok
Didn't think I forgot Thor did you? Well this is the last Marvel movie we will get this year. And funny thing is that Marvel is getting closer and closer to the epic crossover Avengers: Infinity War which comes out in May next year by giving us three movies instead of two. Anyway, according to the official synopsis of the film, Thor will be at another corner of the universe where he loses his beloved hammer and has to fight against time and space to return home to defeat a deadly new threat. But he also has to take on not only villainous Hela, but his former ally, the Incredible Hulk. I guess this sounds about right for the synopsis of Thor Ragnarok. The film will be directed by Taika Waititi. Returning cast members from previous Marvel movies will include Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Mark Ruffalo and Benedict Cumberbatch. New cast will include Cate Blanchett as main villainess Hela (Marvel's first female movie villain), Karl Urban as Skurge the Executioner, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster and Tessa Thompson as Thor's new love interest Valkyrie. This movie will definitely possess the power of Thor and be worthy enough to bring the Marvel Cinematic Universe up a notch.
2. Beauty and the Beast
Now that we are at the dawn of Disney movies being redone as live-action treatments, we have had a slew of movies based off original Disney classics from Maleficent (Sleeping Beauty), to Cinderella and to more recently The Jungle Book which came out in April last year. And the next Disney live-action film is Beauty and the Beast. The original 1991 classic is hands down, my all time favorite Disney animated classic. And we are now getting a live-action treatment and it looks so good. The cast is great, the art is fabulous and it looks like we will be getting a Beauty and the Beast that will be cherished by a new generation. The film will be directed by Bill Condon (Twilight Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2). Disney veteran Alan Menken will return to compose the film. The cast includes Harry Potter's Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast alongside Luke Evans (The Hobbit Trilogy), Kevin Kline, Josh Gad (Frozen) Ewan McGregor (Star Wars, Jack the Giant Slayer), Stanley Tucci (Captain America: The First Avenger, Transformers Age of Extinction), Audra MacDonald, Ian McKellen (X-Men, The Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code) and Emma Thompson (Harry Potter, Saving Mr. Banks). The tale as old as time will be renewed. So be our guest for the remake of a lifetime!!!
1. Star Wars Episode VIII
And yes. My #1 movie for 2017 is the next Star Wars entry. Episode VIII will reportedly kick off right where The Force Awakens left off and will continue the adventures of Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron and company as they continue their fight against the First Order. When The Force Awakens debuted in 2015, fans were super happy that J.J. Abrams continued the beloved story. But he is not the director here. This time around, Rian Johnson will direct the movie and Abrams will serve as an executive producer. Returning cast will include veterans Mark Hamill, the late Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew and Anthony Daniels, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Issac, Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie, and Lupita Nyong'o. New cast members will include Benicio del Toro (Guardians of the Galaxy) as a new villain and Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) in an unspecified role. Prepare to return to a galaxy far far away this coming holiday season!!!
Now I've gotta give out some honorable mentions to some movies that didn't really make my top 10 list for this year.
Honorable mentions go out to:
- The Fate of the Furious
- Cars 3
- Kingsman The Golden Circle
- The Lego Batman Movie
