Batman, Doctor Who, Underworld, Arrow, & Alicia Witt. These are a few of my favoite things

I have been a fan of this series since I was in high school. I love the first two films. Rise of the Lycans wasn't bad. It was just a retelling of a story we seen in flashbacks. So I wouldn't suggest watching unless you want more of Underworld. Awakening was good. At the time, I thought it was bad ass. Is it the best movie ever? No but why would you expect that? Now we have Blood Wars.

While this is a follow up to Awakening, they seem to ignore some things. Mainly, the real world. Last film we seen the humans discovering Vampires & Lycans & of course murdering them! I don't recall seeing any humans. The real world never played a part nor mentioned. Understandably fans probably didn't care much for that so they ignore it & refocus on the Underworld. This becomes obvious when we see the East Coven & we learn that is a new console. Seeing Thomas (Charles Dance) enter the coven looked & felt like the scene from the first Underworld film. Where Selene (Kate Beckinsale) walked into the coven. The fancy dressed vamps stop to look at them.

The last film left me assuming we would be searching for Michael. I was wrong of course. Micheal is MIA again. Eve, who we were just introduced to in Awakening is MIA. But David (Theo James) is back. I don't really care about David. In Awakening is was just there. A sidekick of sorts. He doesn't see eye to eye with his dad & he wants to fight for his people. Probably has a hard on for Selene but why wouldn't you? I liked his father. He had a presences to him. When he spoke, I listened.

The plot here is the Lycans have a new leader, Marius (Tobias Menzies). He is after Eve's blood. Selene has a death warrant on her head by the vampires as well. So a Blood War between Lycans & Vampires & both trying to kill Selene.

In the past, the Lycans were sympathetic. Slaves wanting their freedom. Being prosecuted against. Now they are simply bad. They are the enemy who must be put down. It's disappointing. The Vampires that aren't on Selene's side are still villains still.

Marius is a disappointing villain & leader. The only motive he has is he wants to kill all the vampires. He killed Micheal off scene, & uses his blood to make himself more powerful. This bothers me for two reasons. One; he was almost killed by a hybrid in the second film. However, no one knew just how powerful he could be & he ends up coming back alive & slaying the first Werewolf. So I'm suppose to believe a Lycan managed to off him? Two; I know this was done so they can write the character off. Either Scott Speedman wasn't going to come back or they want David to be the new love interest.

Varga (Merlin's Bradley James) did a dick move early on in the film. He never got his comeuppances. He turn on his lover, Semira (Lara Pulver)

The story is fine but not as good as past ones. The end sort of resets things. I was disappointed by some things but I wasn't bored or annoyed. One twist early on was good. I don't know what Marius motive is besides he wants the vampires dead & become more powerful. The other villain was good enough. I wanted to see them get theirs & I knew what motivated them.

I'm going to say I enjoyed Blood Wars but it's my least favorite of the main series. I don't think we needed this film. For me, it's 3 out of 5. Room for more films, however I hope more thought goes into the story & characters.
