I'm Al and I love combat sports and pro wrestling. For those who wrestle or fight we salute you.

Tiffany van Soest has accomplished a lot in her combat sports career, but she has yet to capture her first professional mixed martial arts victory. That could all change on May 20 at Invicta FC 23.

At the event, which is headlined by a flyweight bout between former title challenger Vanessa Porto and undefeated prospect Agnieszka Niedźwiedź, van Soest will face Las Vegas native Christine Ferea in a strawweight bout.

This is an important fight for van Soest, one that could be the start of a great MMA run.

The former Lion Fight champion and Muay Thai aficionado made her highly anticipated professional MMA debut in September 2016, against former King of the Cage amateur strawweight champion Kalyn Schwartz. Despite landing a couple of shots in both rounds, van Soest was submitted by Schwartz with a rear naked choke.

Van Soest wasn’t out of action for very long after the loss. In December she returned to professional kickboxing for Glory, defeating Jessica Gladstone and Amel Dehby to win the super bantamweight grand prix, becoming Glory’s first woman champion. She was also named Glory "Newcomer of the Year" in 2016.

Van Soest’s fight with Ferea should be fireworks on the feet. Ferea made her professional debut in January, finishing Rachael Ostovich in the third round of their fight. She went 3-0 as an amateur, including two knockout wins that were less than a minute.

Ferea also has a background in Muay Thai, winning three fights in Lion Fight - one pro and two amateur. In fact, on the same night she finished Calie Cutler in 49 seconds, van Soest defeated Bernise Alldis to win the Lion Fight featherweight title.

This should be an entertaining fight, especially if it stays on the feet. Both fighters have good striking and are not afraid to get into the thick of battle.

I was excited when van Soest announced she was making the transition to mixed martial arts, but I'm not surprised that her MMA journey has a rocky beginning. Any athlete who transitions to a new sport is going to have that steep learning curve. However, I think she's going to build off that momentum from the Glory grand prix and give fans a show at Invicta 23.
