may have divided audiences, but Warner Bros. took most of the blame for interfering with the project too much due to nervousness over Batman v. Superman's box-office performance. Fans still praised director David Ayer for his attempt to make a great movie, and have been waiting for the director to work on a new project — which is potentially about to happen...

David Ayer Is Discussing A 'Scarface' Reboot

Deadline has reported that David Ayer is in early negotiations with Universal Studios to direct a new movie, which would be a new take on the classic 1983 gangster film starring Al Pacino (which, before anyone calls this sacrilege, was itself a remake of the 1923 original). Universal has already slated the reboot for an August 2018 release date, starring Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Diego Luna. No other casting announcements have been made.

Originally, Antoine Fuqua was supposed to direct, but he had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Now we may get to see the Suicide Squad director regain his popularity with the critics and fans — after all, Ayer (as a screenwriter) gave us The Fast and the Furious, Training Day and End of Watch.

Dylan Clark is producing along with Netflix film boss Scott Stuber and original 1983 producer Martin Bregman. This Scarface version will be a reboot to both the 1923 and 1983 movies with new elements thrown into the mix. The movie will be set in Los Angeles and will incorporate many modern elements into the mix.

Even fans who consider Suicide Squad an incoherent mess can admire the unique elements Ayer introduced. He surely knows that he is dealing with a beoved story and that he must treat the reboot with care, while adding fresh and news ideas and elements. It's a tough balancing act, but we can't wait to say hello to Diego Luna's little friend.
