We've yet to see an official release date for #Outlander Season 3, though those involved in the show's production have been doing their best to curb fans' "droughtlander" pains. But could their teasers indicate big spoilers for the upcoming season?
From blurry tweets to candid interviews, here's what the latest teasers tell us about Outlander Season 3:
1. A Big Change For An Iconic Scene
Aside from the promise of some behind-the-scenes videos during production, show writer and executive producer Matthew B. Roberts also released this sneak peek at the script:
A handful of words might not seem like much of a teaser, but a surprising amount of information can be deduced from one blurred-out snapshot. Outlander Season 3 will be based on Voyager, the third book in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. This script sample is an obvious reference to the book's scene in which Jamie and Claire meet in a print shop after being apart for 20 years.
The show's production designer Jon Gary Steele also hinted at this recently, with an image of these letters from a printing press:
However, not everyone was excited to see Roberts' teaser— and that's because there was one obvious difference from how the scene was described in the book. In Voyager, Jamie is already inside the print shop when he meets Claire. But in Roberts' photo, the script clearly describes Jamie as entering the store.
It's just a minor change; but to Outlander fans, that scene is sacred. On Twitter, many fans reacted angrily, suggesting that if the show's writers had already changed such an important scene from the book, there would surely be more unwelcome changes.
Roberts didn't take too kindly to the accusations, saying that it "feels like you have zero trust in me". He encouraged his Twitter followers to cease the speculation while they were ahead, suggesting that "guessing can only cause angst".
2. A Slightly Different Beginning
Voyager begins after the conclusion of the Battle of Culloden, with Jack Randall dead and Jamie fleeing the British. But according to a recent forum post from author Diana Gabaldon herself, the show will depict the full battle, including the details of Randall's death. At last, sweet revenge for both Jamie and the viewers!
A press release from Starz has also indicated some big differences for Season 3. While Voyager delves deep into Jamie's life after Claire's departure through the stones, the show will also explore Claire's side of the story since reuniting with her first husband, Frank.

3. New Locations
Much of Voyager takes place outside of Scotland. There's a return to Paris, as well as some new locations: America, Jamaica and Hispaniola. There's no confirmation yet on how many will be shown in the show, but one thing's for certain: Jamie's going somewhere quite different from the overcast Scottish Highlands.
Sam Heughan revealed during a Facebook live stream that the show was going to wrap filming in South Africa in May 2017. The jungles of South Africa do resemble the lush landscapes of Georgia, Jamaica and Hispaniola, but there's no telling how many of those included in the book will actually make the final script.
Unfortunately, Heughan's comment also indicated something not quite as exciting...
4. A Delayed Release
With filming wrapping in May, the expected release date of April 2017 seems highly unlikely. Post-production is bound to take weeks at least; though with the lengthy amount of time spent on filming alone, it's likely to be closer to months. Don't go marking your calendars just yet.
5. More Sex Scenes Than Season 2
Don't worry, there's good news yet! Season 2 was a distinct change of pace from the show's usual sexy escapades, with Jamie recovering from the trauma of being tortured by Jack Randall in Season 1. When asked about the potential of a raunchy reunion between Jamie and Claire, Caitriona Balfe (Claire) hinted at a little more action for Season 3:
"There will be some other sex going on. I think to really let the reunion and everything that’s going to happen once Jamie and Claire see each other, I think it’s really special. Maybe they’ll have to wait a little bit, but I don’t think it’s going to be as scarce as last season, shall we say?"
But then again, that news may not be as happy as you'd think. Voyager involves Jamie being the victim of sexual blackmail, leading to him fathering an illegitimate love child. Can't we cut this guy a break already?
6. Some New Faces
At least one thing's sure to stay the same as the books— the introduction of some brand new characters:
- Season 2 favorite Fergus, now 30 years old, played by César Domboy
- Jamie's nephhew Ian, played by John Bell
- Claire's best friend Joe Abernathy, played by Wil Johnson
- Jamie's blackmailer Geneva Dunsany, played by Hannah James
- Laoghaire's daughter Marsali, played by Lauren Lyle
- Geneva's sister Isobel, played by Tanya Reynolds
The question is, will we be seeing Brianna return to 1746 to find her parents, or will we have to wait until Season 4? Only time will tell!
