We are quickly approaching the inaugural women's featherweight title bout. At #UFC208, Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie will fight to determine the first ever female 145 pound champion. Although it has had a rather shakey start, the emerging women's #featherweightdivision could be fascinating.
Unable to make 135 pounds, the #Invicta featherweight champion has been fighting in Catchweight bouts. Being one of the most recogniseable figures in women's MMA, the UFC wanted to find her a place in the company. A UFC featherweight division was created with the intention of Justino fighting for the inaugural belt.
However, in a bizarre turn of events, Cyborg was forced to turn down two offers saying she could not make the weight. Dana White and Joe Silva were exasperated and have said that, if she cannot make 145 in eight weeks, perhaps she is too big for featherweight too.
With that being said, there is no chance of a heavier weight class so Cyborg will undoubtedly fight at featherweight. Provided she is given enough notice to make the weight, Cyborg could get the winner of this bout. #HollyHolm versus Cris Justino is certainly a fun prospect.
White himself has confirmed that the ultimate goal would be to make Justino vs #RondaRousey in the future. Cyborg could not get down to bantamweight in a million years but could Ronda move up? No disrespect to Cyborg, she is just so muscular that she struggles to get down to 140. In interviews regarding the inagural featherweight bout, Holly has talked about facing Ronda again too. Even if Ronda wins her upcoming 135 pound title fight against #AmandaNunes. Is a women's champion versus champion superfight on the horizon?
The women's featherweight championship picture could be fascinating. There are a number of female fighters on the UFC roster that may want to move up in weight. The extra weight allowance will make for some really exciting fights. I am intrigued to see how already formidable fighters like Cyborg, Rousey and Holm perform at 145.
