*Spoilers from The Walking Dead comics and possible spoilers from the television series. You can also check out this one on one comparison of the latest trailer and the comic books for potential spoilers here.*
Since The Walking Dead’s Season 6 finale, fans are dying to know what the show has in store for us in Season 7. This past season, The Walking Dead has stayed true to the comics like we’ve never seen before in the series, at least for the second half of Season 6. The biggest reveal this past season was the appearance of Negan for sure. Fans of the comic series of TWD have literally waited years for this character to appear onscreen and we finally have him.
Not only Negan, but other events and characters made a huge impact for Season 6, including the introduction of Jesus and The Hilltop community, the "No Way Out" story arc, Carl getting shot in the eye, and the unfortunate death of a beloved character in the finale. Now that those events are out of the way, here's what we can expect to see this fall when The Walking Dead returns for its seventh season.
5. Negan's Comedic Side
If you’re a reader of TWD comic, then you know that Negan is one of the funniest characters you’ve ever read about. Negan is a character where he can be the most serious villain on one page, then you flip to the next page, and he’s making a wise crack on somebody or playing ping pong or a round of billiards in Alexandria. We got a few wise cracks out of Negan in the finale by making jokes about “lightening up” to Carl, or his comment to Abe about shaving his beard. Negan is a character we are going to love and I assure you, he’s here to stay.
4. Ezekiel And Shiva
In the comics, Ezekiel is one of my favorite characters. He’s fun, charismatic, I think the show would benefit from having him and it’ll be fun to see him and Rick develop a strong friendship. His lifespan in the comics was significantly long and I hope that means we’ll get a lot of screen time with him, along with The Kingdom.
As awesome as Ezekiel is, the show can’t add him without adding his trusty sidekick tiger, Shiva. She doesn’t play the most “primary” role in the comic series, but she does have some great moments. She ends up saving Ezekiel’s life, among the other survivors as well.
We may not be seeing a “real” tiger on set, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun watching her. It wouldn’t make sense for a real tiger anyway — having a real tiger eat walkers would be dangerous to the crew members and cast. Whatever the show decides to do with Shiva, I know fans will be satisfied.
3. Buildup To The 'All Out War' Story Arc
If you’re a fan of the comic, you are very familiar with this story arc. This has to be the greatest story arc TWD comic has ever done. With the introduction of Negan, the Saviors, Ezekiel’s men, and the Hilltop Community, this upcoming storyline is right around the corner.
Comic fans know that Rick and his people, along with the Kingdom and the Hilltop, form an alliance to attack Negan and the Saviors at the Sanctuary. They left with a victory, trapping Negan inside. The show may differ from this, but I could see this storyline lasting a whole season. There’s just so much in the story that can’t be untold. There are many things that happen between Negan’s kill and "All Out War," so at least the second half of Season 7 needs to focus on building the momentum.
2. Daryl's Revenge On Dwight (If Daryl Survives The Premiere)
This subject can be quite controversial. We all know that Daryl is wounded, but Dwight meant to kill Daryl. He wasn’t supposed to survive that gunshot. Unless it said otherwise and I missed it, I believe Negan had Dwight keep Daryl alive for a reason. Yes, he’s still a candidate for the death-by-bat, but if he survives, he would be severely wounded. Where the wound is located, it would be hard for Daryl to do what he’s best at. Just that alone has me convinced that he may die very soon — if not by Negan, then Dwight.
Daryl and Dwight are two characters that are just too much like one another. It wouldn’t make sense for both characters to be alive. As a huge fan of Daryl, I hope he doesn’t die, but unfortunately, he’s got to go eventually. If he survives the premiere, I want to see Daryl get revenge on Dwight first. I don’t know how or when, but if he survives, he’s out for blood.
1. Carl And Negan's Unfortunate Relationship
This event can well happen within the first few episodes of Season 7. In the comics, the relationship between Carl and Negan is very broad, but interesting. At this point in the comics, Carl is younger than he is on the television series. Why they’re doing this, I’m not sure, but I can tell you that this scene — if done right — could be one of the most intense and exciting moments of Season 7.
The catch is, it may not even be Carl that shares this relationship with Negan. According to showrunner Scott Gimple, this is what he told THR about the subject:
"It may be very brief but we will absolutely see them have a pretty intense moment. There's going to be a bit of remixing and there may be another character involved who takes some of it. That relationship will be absolutely shown. Whether it's with Carl or not, I can not say. But I absolutely want to explore Negan having that kind of respect for someone, which is the hallmark of that relationship."
I don't know about you, but I am super pumped for Season 7! Season 6 was a fantastic season for the show, by far one of the best. The writers and directors definitely set the bar, even with the unfortunate cliffhanger finale. Overlooking the cliffhanger, we should still be excited to see what's in store this fall.
