Ideas for a Charmed reboot have long been in the works, and now it looks like it might finally be coming to fruition. The CW has officially begun work in the process, having picked up Jane the Virgin showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman to start development on the new series.
The original Charmed ran for eight years on the WB and oftenproved a significant hit for the network. Another remake of the series was attempted back in 2013 by CBS, though it never got past the development stage, and received negative feedback from the show's original star
This new version of the show will reportedly be set in the 1970s, and has been indicated to connect to the original show in some way - though it's unknown exactly what that will be. It also seems likely the show will hold onto the same basic premise of its three witch sisters inheriting magic to use in an ongoing fight against demons and other dark creatures. Though if it chooses to take place in the same world and utilize some of the same concepts, it opens itself up to differing story possibilities.
While reboots are all on the rage on television, the CW has largely stayed away - with most of its current line-up falling into the category of spinoff or adaptation. It remains to be seen how successful this particular reboot could be, given that it's only been about ten years since the original show went off the air.
