Congratulations to the Universal Fan Con! Last night, it met and exceeded its Kickstarter goal of $25,000 with 628 backers who are committed to a new scene for the wonderful immersion of diverse geekiness.
It is a brand new con from the minds of The Black Geeks and Black Girl Nerds, alongside a highly experienced and motivated team dedicated to the excitement of multi-fandom. Its motive arises as a result of increasingly diverse crowds seen at cons, yet this super intersectionality is often simply relegated to a panel, even in the most positive of environments. It is an all too familiar frustration for marginalized geeks and guests that a majority of diversity talks focus on continued struggle, rather than their successes and the talent individuals possess, including and excluding how they identify. Universal Fan Con believes in a celebration of inclusivity and representation within comics, video games, TV shows, anime and film, for fans and by fans. Panels, parties and professionals at the Con will consider this sentiment their chief objective to ensure guests of any identities of race, gender, ability and sexual orientation feel right at home.
Hoping for at least 10,000 attendees, the event will take place on the 27th to the 29th of April 2018 at the Baltimore Convention Center. Universal Fan Con promises many celebrity commitments, with actor and comedian Lamorne Morris as its first partner to be announced. Usually with events of this scale and undertaking combined with celebrity appearances, one could expect the ticket price to be rather hefty indeed. This isn't the case for Universal Fan Con because in order to be accessible financially as well as intersectionally, prices are thoughtfully kept as low as is possible.
Even though the Kickstarter is totally funded, those excited for the event's potential can still take part in the Con's journey to 2018. There are ten days left to pledge for rewards, ranging from passes with a personal thank you letter to sponsorship with hotel accommodation and full backstage access. And, as the venue is secured, interested vendors can contact the team well ahead of time.
Be sure to follow the Con's official Twitter account and like its official Facebook page for more updates, or subscribe to the mailing list to receive the latest news straight to your inbox. Once again, fantastic news for the team behind Universal Fan Con, and start your countdowns to this fresh take on the con experience - only 479 days to go!
