You are the Princess Shireen of the House Baratheon, and you are my daughter.

Swapping out TV and trips to the cinema for a cheap night in with the old Netflix (and possibly some good company...) is a thing we've seen happening for a while now, but streaming services rarely have really new movies. If you want to watch The Martian online you'll probably have to struggle through a laggy stream - and when you're trying to be smooth with bae, that just won't do.

Matt Damon's sci-fi blockbuster is just one of several big new movies being released on DVD and blu-ray this month. Check out the list and see what takes your fancy.

Sicario

The lowdown: U.S. SWAT agent Kate Macer (Emily Blunt) is recruited into a team tasked with infiltrating a big-time drug across the border in Mexico, although quite why she's chosen is a mystery gradually unravelled as the film propels itself toward a bloody climax. Benicio del Toro, Jon Bernthal and Josh Brolin give killer performances, but this is Blunt's show and she nails it.

Metacritic score: 81

Sicario is out January 5th on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Irrational Man

The lowdown: Being a Woody Allen movie, it goes without saying that you'll find all of the classic ingredients here: a middle-aged professor (Joaquin Phoenix) in the throes of an existential crisis, an attractive younger woman (Emma Stone) with whom he can't resist getting involved, and a lot of neurotic humor. Not exactly vintage Woody, but nowhere near as feeble as his worst.

Metacritic score: 53

Irrational Man is out January 12th on DVD and Blu-Ray.

The Martian

The low-down: Mark Watney (Matt Damon) goes on a manned mission to Mars, and finds himself stuck there when a storm strikes. As it happens Mars is actually quite far from Earth (seriously!), so it's going to be a while until anyone can rescue him, forcing Watney to attempt to farm food on a planet where crops can't grow. A surprisingly feel-good film considering the premise. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Jessica Chastain and Kristen Wiig co-star.

Metacritic score: 80

The Martian is released January 12th on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Mr. Robot Season 1

The lowdown: Elliot (Rami Malek), a borderline schizophrenic computer programmer with a habit of snorting morphine and an epic sense of detachment from the world around him, is drawn into a cyber-terrorist plot to bring down a huge multinational known as Evil Corp. [Mr. Robot](tag:3603120) is a relentless thrill ride which was just awarded with a surprise Golden Globe win, and with Season 2 on the horizon, now is the perfect time to binge your way through Season 1.

Metacritic score: 79

Mr. Robot is released January 12th on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride

The lowdown: The 2015 Christmas edition of Sherlock proved to be probably the most divisive episode to date, taking Sherlock and Watson back to 1880s Victorian London for a one-off adventure with a twist you won't see coming (in classic Sherlock fashion). You can also catch the special in limited theaters in the UK and US on the weekend of 5-6 February.

IMDb score: 8.5

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride is released January 26th on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Straight Outta Compton

The lowdown: The surprise hit of 2015, Straight Outta Compton is the biopic the world never knew it wanted. The film charts the swift rise of the legendary hip-hop collective N.W.A, the group's collapse at the height of their success as Eazy-E (Jason Mitchell) branched out solo, and their beef with Jerry Heller, the manager who may or may not have taken more than his cut.

Metacritic score: 72

Straight Outta Compton launches January 19th on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Downton Abbey Season 6

The lowdown: The final-ever season of the preposterous period drama written by Julian Fellowes, in which the Crawley family are insanely lazy and hideously privileged whilst the poor bastards who work for them slave away in the kitchen and live in rooms without windows. Oh, what a time to be alive! Season 6 is an enjoyable encore which resolves every story in a satisfactory way, not least of all whether self-appointed spinster Edith will finally convince a man to marry her.

Metacritic score: 76

Downton Abbey Season 6 is out January 26th on DVD and Blu-Ray.
