Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones

Westeros won its first Outstanding Drama Series Emmy for Season 5, even though the buzz I detected was mixed compared to other years. For Season 6, it was decidedly unmixed and in fact, very beloved. Bet on a Game of Thrones repeat. Mr. Robot is the only freshman with enough of an impact to break into the field; it will be unprecedented, but this is a show known for breaking the mold. Better Call Saul had the opposite of a sophomore slump, so it is a potential spoiler for the grand prize. The rest of the field will likely be made up of shows that keep getting nominated (some deservedly, some less so). The last spot is a toss up between Downton Abbey and The Good Wife – I’ll go with the Crawleys, whose nominations have been a little more consistent than the Florricks’.

1. Better Call Saul
2. Downton Abbey
3. Game of Thrones
4. Homeland
5. House of Cards
6. Mr. Robot
7. Orange is the New Black

Rectify is slow-burn television for people who like cinematic beauty with their moral quandaries. It was a brother-versus-brother battle royale on Season 2 of Better Call Saul, as well as a love story, heist caper, comedy of manners, and a tragic tale of the dissolving relationship of two brothers who truly love each other. Mr. Robot is one of those crazy shows that distracts you by making its influences really obvious, only to gradually reveal how thrillingly original it is. Hannibal closed out its three-season journey of the soul in appropriately grandiose fashion. UnREAL does not endorse terrible television producing behavior, it just portrays it. (Or does it endorse it?) No mere addition to the comic book canon, Jessica Jones is a bracing depiction of the aftermath of trauma. Orphan Black got back into gear for Season 4, as the clones took control and uncovered their origins.

1. Rectify
2. Better Call Saul
3. Mr. Robot
4. Hannibal
6. Marvel’s Jessica Jones
7. Orphan Black
