Last year, the smart money looked like Last Week Tonight would win in its first season, but instead The Daily Show won in its last Jon Stewart season. It will still be tough for John Oliver to get the win, now that fellow TDS alum Samantha Bee has made her own splashy debut. And will The Daily Show itself still manage a nom with a new host? And what about Stephen Colbert with a new network? There may be room for only one of those two. And we will likely be looking at one more newbie: James Corden on the buzzy strength of Carpool Karaoke.

One could say that John Oliver and Samantha Bee are in a Daily Show alum slugfest, but they are taking different (complementary and equally valuable) approaches. Many thanks to Last Week Tonight’s fastidiousness and Full Frontal’s catharsis! Folks, you gotta check out The Chris Gethard Show (full disclosure: I know several people who work on it), especially the dumpster episode with Paul Scheer and Jason Mantzoukas. CONAN is doing its best to keep the traditional talk show meaningful; the remote episodes (Armenia and Korea this year) are the most vital. A lot of us get our news from @midnight nowadays.
