Conan O'Brien is bad at video games. Really bad. He's also hilarious while playing them, and he's played many of them on his 'Clueless Gamer' segment featured on Conan that airs on TBS.
The segment has become so popular, and he's gotten so many publishers sending him games to "review" (make fun of), that the segment is getting its own show, according to Hollywood Reporter.
TBS president Kevin Reilly told THR during an interview:
"We're going into production next month on a new series, #CluelessGamer, based on the viral video [Conan O'Brien has] done where he essentially makes fun of video games, gets celebrities to play and makes commentary on them."
The only possible down side is that Conan himself may not be hosting the show, and it might be a tall task to find someone as equally clueless about games, yet still as funny while playing them, as Conan.
Since 2012, Conan has reviewed and done commentary on games like Final Fantasy XV, Grand Theft Auto V, Skyrim, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, while many times having a celebrity come on the segment with him for banter and some multiplayer gaming.
As opposed to Jimmy Fallon, who is downright giddy whenever he does a segment on The Tonight Show about #videogames, Conan admits that he is slightly contemptuous of the video game medium – which tends to make the segment even more entertaining.
Gaming has become much more mainstream over the years, yet it's still a long way from #TV and movies. As gamers, there's a lot we take for granted about our favorite medium that people who don't play games are....well, clueless about.
Watching people who are awful at playing video games makes us gamers feel smart (or really nerdy) about our little underground hobby. If they find someone very clueless and very funny to host the show (or convince Conan himself to do it), #TBS may be onto something here.
