Well, the day finally came Rick and Morty fans. After 19 years we were finally going to be able to taste the delicious #SzechuanSauce again. On Oct 7, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. select McDonald's locations were giving away 1,000 limited-edition, hand numbered, screen-printed collectible sauce-themed posters and a limited-edition, run of Szechuan Sauce. While the promotion was not directly tied to Rick and Morty, it's pretty much known how much influence the show had on bringing the sauce back. However, while some fans did get some Szechuan Sauce, many fans were left wanting. Very few McDonald's locations actually received a case of the Szechuan Sauce to give out.
McDonald's has a website up promoting the new sauces that allows you to find out which McDonald's closest to you had it in stock. Unfortunately, when people arrived they were told that there was no more Szechuan Sauce left in stock. There are reports of some locations only receiving a maximum of 30 sauce packets to give out!
It's has also been reported that some people started lining up to get the sauce as early as 9:00 a.m. to get the limited-edition Szechuan Sauce and we're told at 11:00 a.m. that they were already out. Some major cities such as Denver, Colorado didn't have a single McDonald's location with the Szechuan Sauce. Furthermore, in some of the locations that did have the sauce, the police had to be called in to break up a Szechuan Sauce related fights. One fight, in particular, was reported at a McDonald's in the Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta.
McDonald's did state clearly on their website that the Szechuan Sauce would be in limited supply, but it doesn't seem that people understood exactly how limited the sauce would be!
...we’re also giving away a one-time only, limited-edition, run of Szechuan Sauce in select restaurants. And when we say limited, we mean really, really limited!
Many fans have taken to twitter to share their sad experiences trying to get some of the sauce. Some even shared their displeasure on the McDonald's twitter page. Throughout the situation McDonald's still managed to issue an apology to #RickandMorty fans on their twitter page.
While it is not known if #McDonalds will ever truly bring the Szechuan Sauce back, fans will likely be waiting. Hopefully they decide to make this right in the near future, but most likely the sauce won't return until Disney's live-action adaptation of Mulan hits theaters sometime in 2018.
