Oh, geez Rick... y-y-yooou're really laying it on thick here. I mean, first you say Rick and Morty Season 3 is going to be released in 2016... aaa-and then you tell them soon, but it's 2017 now and there's still no announcement. I-I-I... I'm not sure the fans are gonna be too happy about this delay Rick. They... they're kinda desperate and it's making me nervous.

Granted, "patience is a virtue" and "good things come to those who wait," but equally, the wait for more dimension-hopping, burp-filled adventures with Rick and Morty feels never-ending. The Adult Swim animation is unlike anything else in the over-saturated world of television, and the mass hysteria over the new season fully justified.

The final episode of Season 2 was aired in October 2015, closing with Mr. Poopybutthole telling us we'd have to wait 18 months for new episodes. Although that would lead us up to April 2017, rumors online teased a late 2016 release, with an almost constant dialogue of contradicting statements.

Why 'Rick And Morty' Season 3 Is Taking Longer Than Expected

We're now nearing the end of January, and there's still no sign of an official announcement. Is anyone to blame? Apparently fingers should be firmly pointed in the direction of Dan Harmon, from the mouth of the man himself. In an interview with Indie Wire at the Sundance Film Festival, Harmon shouldered the blame for the delay. He said:

“I’m so sorry. I don’t have a release date for Season 3. It’s not that I know it and I’m not allowed to say it; it’s [Adult Swim’s] domain. What I will tell you is it’s late because of us, it’s late because of me.

"If Justin were here he’d agree. He and I would go, ‘Yeah, we fucked up,’ and it’s hard to put your finger on how we fucked up. ‘Rick and Morty’ keeps taking longer and longer to write, and I don’t know why.”

The comments are worrying. Not because Harmon and Roiland should be doing more, but because the pressure of releasing Season 3 is evident. It wouldn't be unfair to say the success of the show is becoming a burden on the production process, the stress of expectation muffling the free-thinking space where creativity and hallmark quirkiness can thrive.

Harmon's further comments only confirm that. When elaborating on why the process was taking longer than expected, he confirmed the the atmosphere behind-the-scenes was more tense than it was for the first two seasons. He added:

"We have fights all the time and then we have fights about why we’re having fights. Well, we didn’t fight during Season 2, that’s why it’s taking longer! All this fighting! So OK, let’s stop fighting!'"

While part of fandom is expressing the desire for more, the chorus of voices from online communities — especially for shows like Rick and Morty — echo through to the creators of the show, and clearly has had an affect on their way of working.

Harmon's comments provide a message that fans need to rely on the team who have made Rick and Morty such a hit to give Season 3 the time it needs, and to maintain patience — it is a virtue, after all.
