Well, it's that time of year again. #StarWars speculation season has come back with the reveal of the title for the upcoming 8th episode, #TheLastJedi. The internet is already a buzz; just who is the last Jedi?? While there is no official word, I have a few ideas, some that may surprise you.
So first things first. The obvious one. The last Jedi is Luke Skywalker. It's a no-brainer really. Yoda refers to him as just that in Return of the Jedi and he is called that once more in the opening crawl of The Force Awakens. Seeing as he was nearly absent from that film, I would think it's a safe bet that this film will explore his story heavily, as the Last Jedi and why he went into exile, what he's dealing with and the challenges that he will likely face with Rey.
Let's Have A Look At The Options
Of course, the plural form for Jedi is in fact, Jedi, so the title may refer to both Luke and Rey, as she begins her training to become a Jedi Knight. The young scavenger has shown to be quite adapt at using the Force so it's not impossible to think she's going to embark on her Jedi training in this film. However, just because she trains in the Force doesn't mean she'll be known as a Jedi, thus rendering Luke the "last".
There are two other options this title could be suggesting. Titles like to play on words and I believe this title could have a double meaning. The Last Jedi could refer to the last Jedi that were alive, being Yoda and more importantly if the rumors about Rey's parentage are true, Ben Kenobi. If Rey turns out to be a Kenobi, exploring that history will prove to be central to the plot.
Luke And Kylo Ren
But I truly believe the title refers to both Luke and his last pupil, the only living member other than Luke that we know of from his academy. I of course am referring to Kylo Ren, née Ben Solo. Conflicted with the Light Side of the Force, the dark side user and master of the Knights of Ren was technically a Jedi padawan at some point. The ominous red color pallet the teaser poster has opted for suggests a darker, sinister tone and Kylo Ren would certainly fill that bill. With Adam Driver stating the film will explore the character's humanity in this film, I really believe he is a central point of the title and the plot along with his uncle Luke.
