We still are a year away from the release of the second #FantasticBeasts films but the hype train has already left the station thanks to a new cast photo, synopsis and intriguing new title. For those wondering if these #HarryPotter prequel films would continue to use the "Fantastic Beasts" moniker in their titles, you can now rest easy knowing the answer is yes.
Who Is Grindelwald?
Hitting theaters on November 16th 2018, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald already sounds much more appealing in concept based on the title while simultaneously sounding awkward by the continued use of "Fantastic Beasts", as the creatures likely won't play a part in this film's plot. #Grindelwald, portrayed by Johnny Depp, had nothing more than a cameo in the first film but his presence was felt throughout the film. For those who've never read the books, Grindelwald was the most ruthless and feared Dark Wizard of all time until You-Know-Who showed up on the scene decades later. So he's no push over. Even more interesting though is that he was once very good friends with Albus Dumbledore for a short while.
Grindelwald may have been captured at the end of the first movie but we know villains don't just stay captured, so it's no surprise to learn he's on the lose yet again and causing havoc. His master plan is to subjugate all the Muggles in the world and establish a ruling Wizard Order. Funny enough though is that Albus was once in on this plan. But that was prior to the events of this film, which takes place in 1927, some months after the first film. But thanks to the cast photo, fans now have concrete proof that Grindelwald is currently in possession of the Elder Wand, which makes him a serious threat to Europe, which is where the sequel will largely take place.
Dumbledore and Company
Dumbledore this time around is portrayed by Jude Law and we get our first look at him in the new cast photo. Considerably younger than he was in the Harry Potter films, it'll be interesting to see what Law's interpretation of the younger Hogwarts Headmaster-to-be offers and how his former relationship with Grindelwald plays into that. Likely troubled by his former friend's destructive behavior in achieving his New World Order, Dumbledore may be feeling rather guilty in once having a part in Grindelwald's masterplan. For more details on their back-story, catch up on the book version of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Also revealed in the cast photo are Claudia Kim as Maledictus, Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, sitting next to her is Callum Turner as the war hero Theseus Scamander, Newt's brother and the rest of the returning cast, including Tina and Queenie Goldstein, Jacob and of course, Newt himself. The photo also confirms Ezra Miller's Credence will be returning, after his fate was left ambiguous at the end of the first film.
