If you're a fan of the Friday the 13th franchise I'll bet you're thinking, What could I possibly not know about Jason? He's only one of the most popular slasher villains ever!
And to that I'd answer, "You're right about the last part."
However, once you finish reading this list of 9 fun facts, I'm sure you'll learn a thing or two that officially earns you the title of "Jason expert."
9. Jason Was Almost Named Josh
In the script for the original #FridayThe13th, the writer wanted to give Jason Voorhees another name: Josh. It wasn't a big deal at the time, because Jas...uhm... Josh, wasn't supposed to be anything more than the son of the villain, Ms. Voorhees. Fortunately, his name was changed before the film's release.
Josh just doesn't strike the same kind of fear in the hearts of horror fans that Jason does.
8. Friday The 13th Part 3 Was Almost An Exact Replica of Halloween II
After Friday The 13th Part 2, the writers wanted the protagonist (Ginny), to return for another sequel. It was supposed to have Jason track her down to the psychiatric hospital to which she was committed where he'd kill off the hospital staff in pursuit of her -- which is basically Halloween 2, just with Jason instead of Michael Myers.
7. Jason Is Returning To Theaters On Friday, October 13th, 2017
After eight years of development hell the next #FridayThe13th reboot is finally happening. Many rumors have surrounded the project for years, but the ball is rolling now. According to the producers (Brad Fuller, Andrew Form), casting should begin soon, if it hasn't already, that is.
6. His Father Is A Character Within The Franchise
In the Friday The 13th comics, Elias Voorhees is revealed to be Jason's dad. The comic series depicts him as an six foot, 200 pound, alcoholic. He also abused Ms. Voorhees regularly (while she was pregnant with Jason). Pamela of course, hacked his father to death, and subsequently burned away the evidence.
In Friday The 13th Part 6, it was planned to have Elias make his debut in the movie. His reveal would have shown him paying the grave keeper to make sure Jason and Pamela's graves stayed covered. His inclusion never made it into the film though.
5. Jason's Parents Will Both Make Appearances In The Next Friday The 13th Film
An interview with Brad Fuller (the producer of recent Friday The 13th movies), revealed the new film will be ''origin-ish''. Which corresponds with multiple reports that both Mr and Ms. Voorhees will be in the next reboot.
4. Jason Fought Leatherface Before Freddy Krueger
Back in the 1990's (which wasn't that long ago), there was an interesting crossover comic series with Jason and Leatherface from Topps Comics. It begins with Jason catching a train to Texas because Crystal Lake had been polluted with toxic waste. He eventually ends up in the Texas backwoods where he meets Leatherface. They become quick friends, and Leatherface even introduces Jason to his twisted family. Everything goes awry after some time though, which was to be expected.
3. Jason Will Scare The Sh!t Our Of You In His New Video Game
If you're a fan I'm sure by now you've heard about the upcoming Friday The 13th video game which is scheduled to be released later this year. The game looks like loads of fun and actually makes #Jason seem really scary. What's even scarier are the custom perks each Jason skin has. For example, if you choose to play as Jason from Friday The 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, you'll be able to throw knives at other players. (Check out the clip in the video above.)
2. Freddy Vs. Jason Was Supposed To Come Out Way Back In The 1980's
Freddy and Jason were supposed to throw down way before 2003. In 1987, Paramount approached New Line Cinema about doing #FreddyVsJason. However, Paramount wanted full control over the movie and New Line wasn't having it. So the idea was dismissed for a few years.
1. Jason Might've Let His Mother Die For Nothing
Most people know Jason's mother, Pamela Voorhees as the crazy mom who murdered people after the wrongful death of her son in the first film. She unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), died via decapitation. As the franchise lore goes, Jason watched it happen, which was only possible because he never died in Crystal Lake -- contrary to what his mother believed for all those years. If her son had only let her know he was alive, the entire Friday the 13th franchise may have never happened.
