Once upon a time, he was registered as a . Some know him as . Others called him . Then a couple run-ins with the law and some controversial comments made an outcast out of him...

But Mel Gibson is very much back in the spotlight, ladies and gentlemen. 2016 saw his return to the action scene in the heart-pumping Blood Father, as well as an Oscar-nominated return to the 's chair for the World War II drama . Now that the man is back in action, we're eager to see what else he has up his sleeve.

Here's an exclusive look at the upcoming films from your favorite critically-acclaimed actor and director, .

1. The Professor and the Madman

We'll next see Mel on the big screen alongside fellow thespian (and former outcast) Sean Penn later this year in the first film adaptation of Simon Winchester's novel. Gibson will play Professor James Murray, who consults Penn's instiutionalized psychopathic Dr. William Minor while assembling the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary.

The film reunites Gibson with his co-writer, Farhad Safinia, and also explains the ratched beard he was sporting throughout the 2017 award season.

2. Daddy's Home 2

We were all surprised when Mel signed on to oppose John Lithgow in the upcoming sequel to the unexpected comedy hit Daddy's Home, starring and . Not many plot details are known at this time, but we do know that Mel will play the father to Wahlberg's Dusty Mayron.

The role will be Mel's first of the comedic (non-action) variety since The Singing Detective back in 2003. We'll have to wait until the end of the year to see if he reignites his wisecracking gig a la Martin Riggs, or if he will embrace the goofball antics of his younger co-stars.

3. The Bombing

Mel certainly has a deep affection for the military heroes who have served our country, and he strives to tell their tales passionately and respectively. And don't think that's limited to the U.S. military, because he's credited as a "Creative Supervising Producer" for the upcoming World War II film, The Bombing.

The film, which takes place in 1940, follows a group of Chinese soldiers fighting to defend a crucial military facility from the . It's a film, but Mel's not the only Hollywood star whose name you're going to recognize. Fellow '80s action icon has an undisclosed role in the film.

4. Dragged Across Concrete

After directing the talented actor in his mind-blowing Hacksaw Ridge, Mel will appear by 's side in the upcoming crime drama, Dragged Across Concrete. The duo will play a pair of loose-cannon police officers (which should bring back some Lethal memories) whose rough-housing tactics get them suspended from the force. Stripped of their badges and their pride, the duo will face new challenges as they take on the criminal underworld, in the newest adventure from the director of .

The release dates of all of these films are set in stone, but wait - Mel promises more. These next few projects are still in the early stages of development, but we've dug up as much info as we can on Gibson's future endeavors.

5. The Barbary Coast

Mel is one of the head writers and directors on the upcoming television series, The Barbary Coast, which will feature step-father/daughter duo and . Gibson will also have a recurring role in the series, which takes place in a seemingly-lawless San Francisco during the Gold Rush.

The project will be Gibson and Russell's first collaboration since the 1988 crime drama, Tequila Sunrise. It's Mel's first big endeavor on the television scene, and is currently being shopped around to various networks.

6. Every Other Weekend

After seeing his sizzling performance in Blood Father, you should not be too surprised to hear that Mel is gearing up for another action thriller. In Every Other Weekend, Mel will play a CIA operative who reluctantly reveals his covert occupation to his grown son when their father/son trip to Paris turns deadly. It has not yet been determined who will play Mel's son in the film, but the producers, who come fresh off the track, promise satisfaction for all of you action junkies out there.

7. Passion of the Christ: Resurrection

Yes, critics, you've read correctly. Mel confirmed that development has officially begun on the sequel to his controversial when he appeared on The Late Show with last November. So far, this verbal declaration is all we have on the film, and it is currently unknown how much of the first film's crew (if any) will return for another go-around.
