The official title for the eighth episode of the #StarWars saga has been revealed. This Monday (23rd January), a post on the official Star Wars website revealed the film will be called Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with a new teaser poster:
This new title, alongside the poster itself, beg several questions, and hint as to what we can expect when The Last Jedi drops this December. We're going to be breaking the news down, so beware for potential spoilers for the film and definite spoilers for The Force Awakens, although bear in mind that our predictions are all speculation.
The first thing to consider is the film's title, #TheLastJedi. There's a definite sense of finality surrounding it, probably hinting at the death of one of the Jedi we're currently acquainted with. After the ending of #TheForceAwakens, it's suggested that Rey will be trained by Luke Skywalker to become a Jedi. Clearly, if there is to be one last Jedi, one of them is going to have to kick the bucket.
There are, however, a few problems with this theory. Firstly, it'd be foolish of Disney to reveal the film's big twist in the title, hinting at a Jedi death before we've even seen any footage. The second reason, potentially a clever naming move by Disney, is that the plural of Jedi is - you guessed it - Jedi. The title may not be suggesting one last Jedi, but the final few remaining: we've got two for definite right now, but what's to say that we won't meet a ragtag team of exiled Jedi in the film, a la Rogue One?
The second thing to consider here is the colour scheme Disney have gone for with this poster. The reveal poster for The Force Awakens had the Star Wars logo emblazoned in the trademark yellow font, so it begs the question why The Last Jedi has a red font. The answer could be quite obvious: we're almost definitely in store for a darker ride, if the tragic death of #HanSolo in The Force Awakens is anything to go by. The film ends with Han dead, Finn injured and Kylo Ren off to complete his training with Supreme Leader Snoke, so it's only logical that the follow-up will embrace the dark nature these plot threads would suggest.
Aside from this speculation, there's very little we know about The Last Jedi so far, but rumours suggest a teaser trailer will be arriving around April. What do you think of the new title?
