A short film aimed at showcasing the struggles and hardships that immigrants face in the United States, The Journey is a short film directed by #DiegoLuna for Jarritos, a Mexican soft drink company. The film can be found in both Spanish and English versions and is available on the Jarritos YouTube page.
An Immigrant Past
The story of the United States begins with immigrants. From the pilgrims who came over on the Mayflower to the hopeful men and women who first laid eyes on Lady Liberty and thought they'd made it. This country is a nation of immigrants that will continue to thrive with the accomplishments that they have made for this country.
The following synopsis can be found in the Jarritos website detailing what it means to believe in the American Dream:
This story is ours, a tale forged by dreamers. From a humble pilgrim’s rock, this immigrant song has inspired people to journey from far and wide. Though our stories may have different chapters, they are all bound together by the desire to live free. This short film is more than just another advertisement, it’s a statement of our beliefs. That united we stand strong and only together can we write the next great chapter in this American dream of ours. So journey with us now. Sit down next to the fire of your technological choosing and listen again to the story that made us believe we could dream. This is the story of these United States of America.
The Importance of Our Story
Everyone has a story to tell. Jarritos has begun an initiative for people to share their journey of the American Dream with the world. Though the powers that be want to keep this country as homogeneous as possible, they fail to realize that without immigrants there would be no United States. We all want what's best for our children and our children's children, but we fail to see past our differences because of the color of our skin, our religious practices, and the way we speak. It is time to say goodbye to ignorance and hate, and open the door to compassion and empathy.
The Desire To Live Free
Those who refuse to believe in the value that immigrants give to this country, fail to understand what true freedom costs. To leave your country, your family, your home, and venture off into a new world, where you don't even speak the language is something no one can know until they've been in those shoes.
Some say immigrants are taking away the jobs of the hard-working American people. When a hard-working American works for hours on end in a field picking vegetables at several dollars an hour, then I will believe that immigrants are taking the jobs of those who deserve it.
People have forgotten the sacrifice that previous generations have had to face in order for this generation to have its freedom. The American Dream is a dream made from the blood, sweat, and tears of millions of people who believed this great nation was something worth striving for. It doesn't belong to any one person, it belongs to anyone and everyone who is willing to work hard for it. That is the journey of these United States, the journey of a country that allows you to dream, even when the odds are not in your favor.
