Marvel has brought back the NOW! branding, and that's fantastic news for anyone who read through the previous NOW! era, which started in 2012. Marvel NOW! was characterized by incredible storytelling, beautiful art, and a feeling of modernity and relevance that made every hero feel relatable in one way or another. It seems that the relaunch on this branding is dead set on doing the same. Without further ado, here are the top 5 new Marvel NOW! titles you cannot miss.
5. Infamous Iron Man
One of the biggest villains in the Marvel universe is now a hero. Honestly, what's not to love here? The art is beautiful, Doom's transition is intriguing, the interactions are memorable, and for once, you actually WANT Doom to beat the Thing. This is marvelous work all around, and I can't wait to see what's in store for our... hero.
It's an exciting time for Nova fans, as the Marvel NOW! series features both recent addition Sam Alexander and the return of the original Nova, Richard Rider. The art is gorgeous, the costume design is wonderful, the character interactions have depth seen in few comics. In its mere two issues, it has provided many moments of joy, hilarity, sadness, and hope. It may even be your favorite comic this year.
I was a bit surprised to hear that Gamora was getting her own series. Now I know why. The first issue of Gamora was absolutely outstanding. The series focuses on the assassin's younger days, and features a terrifying cast of characters, including her adoptive father Thanos and sister Nebula. With such a ruthless crew, you'd expect the comic to get bloody. And does it ever. Simply put, I can't wait for more.
Historically, She-Hulk has struggled to hold down solo series, despite multiple attempts of varying quality over the years. Jen Walters has always been somewhat of a comic relief character, and even broke the fourth wall, but oftentimes came off as shallow and a simple side character. This time, Marvel seems intent on doing it right-and so far, they have. They dropped the "She" and are focusing on Jen as a person dealing with the trauma of a loved one's death. It's a moving story so far, and is really bringing the humanity back to a name associated with monstrosity.
Before we get to #1, here are a few honorable mentions that you may enjoy as well.
- Avengers 1.1
- Occupy Avengers
- Unstoppable Wasp
1. The Unworthy Thor
If The Unworthy Thor continues its trajectory, it will go down as one of the definitive Thor stories ever written. The Odinson's quest for worthiness has brought him in to contact with Beta Ray Bill, the Collector, and more, and shows no signs of slowing down or stopping. Unworthy Thor is definitely at the drop-everything-and-read tier, so please, for your own enjoyment, get out there and do so.
