Now we all know that serial killers are ridiculously frightening. They have no social boundaries, and their concepts of normality are incredibly misguided compared to the rest of the world.
These facts and figures you are about to read will really ram it home that serial killers are not like you or me, and thankfully, they don't raise their ugly heads too often or the world would be a much more depraved and evil place.
Please be aware this is NSFW, and it's advised that those who don't like graphic images not read on.
1. What is a Serial Killer?
Someone who has murdered three or more people over a period of more than a month, with a cooling off period between murders.
They do it for the psychological gratification, sexual thrill, anger, money or attention.
2. Those Who Kill Multiple People Quickly Are Called 'Spree Killers'
These people do not have a cooling off period, and will go on a frantic killing spree.
Like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the two students behind the Columbine High School Massacre.
The pair subjected their high school to an attack lasting around 45 minutes on April 20, 1999. Armed with weapons and explosives, they murdered people at random, spraying bullets and throwing home made pipe bombs.
They killed 12 students and 1 teacher, and wounded a further 21, they then took their own lives in the school library.
3. Many Serial Killers Suffered Sexual Abuse as Children
Anthony Sowell horrifically murdered 11 women, disposing of their bodies around his home. Police found bodies in his living room, garden and even a human skull in a bucket.
He claimed that he was driven to it due to sexual and physical abuse he suffered at his family home as a child.
4. BUT, There Are Exceptions
Like cannibalistic necrophiliac Jeffrey Dahmer. He suffered no childhood trauma, but yet he killed, dismembered, and ate parts of his 17 victims. He even took pictures of them, and stored their body parts in his apartment.
5. Most Kill Animals When They Are Children
In fact 99% of all serial killers that have been interviewed state that they began exploring their sadistic fantasies by torturing animals.
Edmund Kemper murdered his grandparents when he was 15 to "see what it felt like." After he was released from prison, he murdered six female college students, his mother, and her friend before turning himself in.
He says that as a child he loved to torture and kill cats he found in his local area and proudly displayed their heads on poles for everyone to see.
6. The United States Has The Highest Amount of Serial Killers
76% of all documented serial killers are from the US, Europe comes second with 17%.
7. Only 10% of Serial Killers Are Female
Aileen Wuornos is America's most high profile female serial killer. She murdered seven men while working as a prostitute.
She claimed that she acted in self defense, but was given the death penalty. She died by lethal injection on October 9, 2002.
8. Lots Have Difficulty Making Friends and Are Isolated
This can be due to the fact their family moved around a lot, which meant the individual found it difficult to make new friends and kept to themselves, or they could be naturally socially awkward.
David Berkowitz, also known as The Son of Sam, was known to be a socially reclusive child. Berkowitz was convicted of a series of shooting attacks that began in New York City in the summer of 1976. Armed with a .44 caliber Bulldog revolver, he'd killed six victims and wounded seven others by July, 1977.
9. Most Keep Trophies of Their Killings
Many liked to keep items belonging to their victims, or even parts of their victims. Ed Gein made items of clothing out of the bodies that he exhumed from graveyards.
Like this apron made of human skin.
Also when Ted Bundy was questioned by Police over polaroids he kept of his victims, his reply was:
“When you work hard to do something, you don’t want to forget it.”
10. They Enjoy Auto Erotica
This basically means masturbation, mainly due to the fact they find it hard to have relationships with others, they tend to enjoy self stimulation.
Take Andrei Chikatilo for example.
He committed the sexual assault, murder and mutilation of a minimum of 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990 in the Russian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR and the Uzbek SSR.
He had severely scarred genitals due to excessive and agressive masturbation.
11. 70% of Serial Killers Have Suffered a Severe Head Trauma
Richard Ramierz, also known as 'The Night Stalker' was a burglar, rapist and murderer, with 14 known victims.
He suffered two major head injuries as a child. When he was two years old a dresser fell on top of him, causing a forehead laceration requiring thirty stitches to close, and when he was five years old he was knocked unconscious by a swing at a park. After the second trauma he experienced frequent epileptic seizures that persisted into his early teens.
12. The first serial sex killer of the modern era was Jack the Ripper
Never identified, Jack the Ripper went on a rampant killing spree, murdering and severely mutilating at least five victims.
The severity of the crimes shocked the city of London and beyond in 1888. No-one had ever seen crimes of this magnitude before.
13. They Develop Strange Fantasies
Hours before his execution Ted Bundy proclaimed that his addiction to pornography is what made him have sordid sexual fantasies and commit his crimes.
He openly talked about the fact he often fantasied about forcing women into having sex, and became aroused by the idea of rape.
14. Very Few Turn Themselves In
After he had killed six students, his mother and her friend, Edward Kemper rang the police and confessed. He waited at the phone booth he used for them to pick him up. He had already served time in prison for killing his grandparents.
15. Some Serial Killers Don't Work Alone
Some people that enjoy sick fantasies will often have the luck of finding someone who share the same desires, or they find a partner who is simply just willing to help them commit crime.
Often referred to as 'The Moors Murderers' Ian Brady and Myra Hindley were a young couple who tortured and killed young children.
Between 1963-1965 the couple abducted, raped and tortured at least five victims. They would then take them to a place called Saddleworth Moor, a desolate span of countryside near their home city of Manchester, England. There they would bury their victims in shallow graves.
When arrested, the pair reluctantly gave little bits of evidence to help police find the bodies. Sadly, one body, of a little boy called Keith Bennett, has never been found. With Myra Hindley dead, Ian Brady still to this day refuses to say where the little boy's remains can be found.
16. Most Serial Killers Are Young
44% started when they were in their 20s, 26% in their teens, and 24% in their 30s.
One of the youngest recorded murderers was an 11-year-old girl called Mary Bell. While she's technically not a serial killer, as she only took the lives of two other children, the sadistic nature of what she did is horrifying.
Suffering abuse from a very young age, Mary fits the description of how a serial killer is created during formative years. Her mother was a prostitute who forced Mary to engage in sex acts with men.
A day before her 11th birthday, Mary strangled her first victim to death. She did the same to her second victim, but this time she took a razor blade and carved the letter M into his stomach. She later went back to his body and cut off his hair, and partially castrated him with a pair of scissors.
When she was charged with murder she simply said; "That's alright by me."
17. Many Are Interested in Voyeurism
Basically being a peeping tom, watching others without being noticed and enjoying the thrill this creates. This obsession tends to grow into burglary, rape, and murder for most serial killers.
18. 86% Are Heterosexual
This means that the majority of serial killers' victims are women.
19. Most Have an Average IQ
Though there are exceptions. One of the worlds most prolific serial killers was Harold Shipman, named 'Doctor Death.'
He was responsible for the deaths of up to 250 of his patients, while working as an NHS doctor in Manchester, England.
He did this purely to profit from their deaths. Some had signed their will over to him, although he also forged documents. He was found guilty of 15 of the murders, and hung himself in his police cell.
20. The World's Most Prolific Serial Killer
Luis Garavito. Known as 'The Beast,' Garavito is a Columbian rapist and child killer. He admitted to the rape, torture, and murder of 147 boys.
From prison he drew maps of where police could find the skeletons of his victims, it's believed there could be as many as 300.
It's hard to comprehend just what goes through the mind of a serial killer as they become more and more detached from reality, falling deeper and deeper into their condition.
The crimes they have committed are truly horrific, and should never be forgotten.
