With 2017 just starting, and 2016 ending, I thought I would talk about my favorite games of 2016.
I have yet to pay Battlefield 1, or Steep, so they will not be on this list.
If this game is one thing, it's fun! With it's unique classes and characters, Overwatch truley is a modern day Team Fortress 2. literally the only reason this game isn't higher on this list, is because I was not able to get into it a whole lot, I heaven't seen everything it has to offer.
If you don't care much about story, but still want an experiance more unique than Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed, Overwatch is the game for you.
Also Tracer's kind of adorable.
4.No Man's Sky
Now hear me out! No Man's Sky was perhaps one of the most hyped games in the history of the industry. I think it's bad reputation came from the hype. And remember, this is a list of MY favorite games of 2016.
No Man's Sky has perhaps the biggest open world to date, letting you explore an entire universe, the size of this game is unfathomable. This game is like nothing I have ever played before, the ability to go into a space ship, fly into space, then land on another planet, blows my mind. The first time I got to fly the ship, and left the atmosphere for the first time, man that feeling's just indescribable.
3. Rise of The Tomb Raider
I can't believe I forgot about this game!, but yeah the PS4 version of Rise Of The Tomb raider came out in 2016, so for a guy like me who owns a PlayStation this is a 2016 game.
Rise Of The Tomb Raider is a really fun game. It adds a lot to the gameplay, and is a good example of a good sequel. While I was never a huge fan of the original Lara Croft, in these reboots (2013s Tomb Raider, and Rise Of The Tomb Raider) Lara is a much more interesting and human character that she ever was before. Also the combat, stealth, and climbing mechanics are very engaging. Rise Of The Tomb Raider is an action packed experience that I highly recommend.
2. Watch Dogs 2
The first Watch Dogs was a very split game, some people loved it, some hated it. Me, I loved it, heck I even liked Aiden Pearce. Watch Dogs 2 was just as good as the first one, if not better. The world of the game is vibrant, beautiful, and full of life. The ability to hack almost everything, makes Watch Dogs 2 feel almost like a superhero game. And Marcus Holloway is a great character. His personality and story is different enough from Aiden that he doesn't feel like a replacement, rather another great character, in this amazing and well realized world.
Watch Dogs is a series that I almost think would make a good Netflix series, so much goes on in both games. In Watch Dogs 2, each little set of missions, feels like it's own mini story, like they were episodes of a T.V show.
1.Uncharted 4: a thief's end
YES!!! This was, in, my opinion, the best game to come out this year. Not only did Uncharted 4 have a great story, but it was also really fun. With Uncharted 4, Naughty Dog once again, proves to be one of the best developers, and best story tellers out there. It's been said that Uncharted is almost like watching a movie, and quite frankly, Uncharted 4 makes a better movie than most, if not any of the movies to come out this year (except maybe Rogue One or Deadpool). Kind of funny how video games are becoming more, and more cinematic, and movies are becoming less so.
Uncharted 4 is a beautiful conclusion Nathan Drakes story, it's an ending that games like Assassin's Creed can only dream of. Part of that is due to it's main character, Nathan Drake. Uncharted is not just about shooting bad guys, climbing walls, visiting exotic places, or even treasure, at it's core Uncharted is about Nathan Drake, and how he develops as a character. The Nathan Drake we see in Uncharted 4 is a very different character than he was in the first game, he's grown up since then, and he's matured quite a bit into a more responsible adult. Yet he's still maintained what makes him Nathan Drake. He still has that cocky sense of humor and lust for adventure. It's that anchor, that focus on one man's journey, that makes the Uncharted series so special. That is why Uncharted 4 is such an impactful end, it says goodbye to a character we've spent 4 games getting attached to, Nathan Drake IS Uncharted, and Uncharted IS Nathan Drake (it's that level of connection that a series like Assassin's Creed will never have, and why Assassin's Creed will never be as good as Uncharted)
One scene in particular that I like, is a scene were Nate is at home talking to his, now wife Elena Fisher (or technically Elena Drake now). She's talking to him about an article she's writing, and her voice trails of as Nate stares at a painting of an island, and you start to hear music subtly play in the background. As Drake stares at the painting you can see the thirst for adventure in his eyes. scenes like that, are what make this game so cinematic, and make the characters feel human.
The supporting cast is great too. I really like the chemistry between the characters of Uncharted. That's what I like about Naughty Dog, they always make games that are really more about the characters than the action, or the world. Yet they still manage to make their games fun as well. Uncharted 4, with as much as it develops the story, and beautifully wraps up Nathan Drake, it also adds a lot to the gameplay. this time around Nathan Drake has a grappling hook that makes traversing the environment so much smoother. The game also adds a lot of stealth mechanics, that make the game feel fresh and new (though if I were to change anything, it would have been really bad a$$ to see Nathan Drake using a bow and arrows), also we now get vehicles. Granted the other Uncharted games had segments with vehicles as well but they weren't integrated nearly as well into those games, as they were in Uncharted 4.
I also found the online to be pretty good too, however I don't play much online games, so that's not much of a factor for me. In short Uncharted 4 has the whole package, story gameplay, graphics, everything. Uncharted 4 is my number 1 game of the year!
What was you favorite game to come out in 2016? Let me know in the comments.
